Two known alterations exist in this film.
1 - The high speed threesome.
2 - The Ludovico rape film.
A Clockwork Orange was originally given an X rating in the United States. It played theatrically for months before Kubrick withdrew the film and cut it to gain an R rating. It was the R rated version which was originally released to home video and cable television. It was not until years later that the original cut was released/restored for home viewing.
Click here for a video comparison of the X and R rated cuts. The R version is taken from the first VHS release of the film more than 20 years ago. The X rated version is taken from the remastered DVD. Remember, some of you may find the content (simulated sex and rape) objectionable, so view at your own risk. 4.43mb

1 - A mistake where a crew member's reflection could be seen in one
scene was removed from the home video version.

2 - The orgy sequence had fully cloaked and, ironically, fully nude figures added to it to obscure some of the more explicit activity in order to avoid an NC-17 rating in the United States. Warner Bros. has so far refused to release the original version in North America.
3 - The orgy sequence also had music replaced. A piece of music by Jocelyn Pook (Migrations) incorporated quotes from the Bhagwad Gita. Hindu groups protested the use of their sacred text in such a scene so an alternate version with different vocals was recorded and inserted into the film for release in Europe and other foreign countries and for subsequent home video release.
Click here for a video comparison of both the two video and audio versions of this scene. Please note this comparison is not frame accurate. The uncensored version of the scene is from a PAL video which runs at 25 frames per second while the censored version is from an NTSC video running at 30 frames per second. While I tried to convert both formats to run at the same speed, the synchronization does drift a bit. The audio from the original version of Migrations was taken from the original release soundtrack CD and plays in the left channel of this stereo video file, while the new, non-offending version of the song comes straight from the PAL video capture and plays in the right channel. Again, the synchronization is close but does drift. This lack of perfect synchronization actually helps the listener to hear the differences. Remember, some of you may find the content (simulated orgy sex) objectionable, so view at your own risk. 6.44 MB
