Welcome to Smooth FPS. Here you will find an affordable camera tracking solution.
History
My name is Ryan, and I am a film and digital media major at University of California Santa Cruz. I designed the track dolly ALPHA, because I was determined to get a sophisticated tracking shot called the "Vertigo" in one on my student films. Unfortunately, professional tracking dollies cost well over $500. So here and now I am offering the general public something that I did not have: a source to an affordable, high quality tracking dolly!
The tracking dolly seen above is called the ALPHA ($250.00 US).
The original Smooth FPS dolly that started it all, the Alpha is an 8 wheel smooth gliding 45lbs dolly that supports up to 250lbs. The Alpha is designed to work only on a straight track. The Alpha is currently the only dolly being offered at this time.
What about the tracks?
Smooth FPS does not sell tracks for the dolly (but will include, with the purchase of a dolly, a small illustrated manual on how to build a track). However, the process of getting your own tracks is both cheap and easy. Simply go to your local hardware store and purchase lengths of1" diameter EMT electrical conduit steel pipes (in sets of two, of course ~ should be about $3.99 for a 10' pipe). Then buy 3/4 inch diameter plastic PVC pipe in 5-6 inch lengths (these will act as the track segment joiners). Be sure to check in the Hardware store that the 3/4 inch PVC fits snuggly into the 1" diameter steel pipe. There you have it! Easy and cheap. You can figure a cost of about $10 for every 10 feet of tracking. I recommend at least 30 feet of track to get an effective feeling tracking shot.
How do I get the ALPHA tracking dolly?!!!
To purchase the Alpha at the price of $250 US, send an email to Disco124@ucsc.edu Why email? Because these dollies are handmade by me, Ryan, and I would like to offer the opportunity for perspective buyers to personally communicate with me so I can provide options (if feasible) with adjustments to the price accordingly
Notes:
(1.) Remember to place orders 1 month in advance.
(2.) Payment must be received before product will be shipped. Shipping is not included. Shipping costs will vary with each buyer's location (i.e. distance from Santa Cruz, California).
(3.) There is no warranty on the dollies. The dollies are sold as is. Returns will not be accepted (The design of the dolly is simple, no specialty parts - You break it, you fix it - builds character :).
