Hello everyone,
My name is Matthew LINDSAY and this is my family. I've been reseaching my family since 1992, with much difficulty. I seem to have major sticking point getting past my great-grandfather, Richard Mack LINDSAY and his wife Sarah Ellen Lackey.
This is some of what I have and thanks to the internet I
can share my research with other genealogist's. I hope a family member can help me find
the missing branches of Our Family Tree.
I was born in MIAMI, FLORIDA, USA, Nov. 5, 1960, to the parents of Jessie James LINDSAY, Jr. and Wilma R. WEISS.
My father, Jessie James LINDSAY was born Oct. 07, 1937 in Arcadia, FLORIDA in DeSoto County and my mother,Wilma Ralphyne WEISS was born July 12, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
I hope that anyone doing
genealogy research in the Florida area and other locations
finds what their
looking for here. I'll try and update my links and other information as frequently
as possible. Please check out the Photograph and Document

Jessie James LINDSAY married Thelma Louise MURPHY
in MYAKKA CITY, FL. in MANATEE County, Oct. 15,
1955. Thelma MURPHY is the daughter of Elton MURPHY, Sr.
and Ida WILSON.
They came back to FLORIDA after Jessie left the Navy.
He was working in aviation as an air traffic controller.
Jessie and Thelma divorced June
19, 1959 in WAUCHULA, FL. in HARDEE County.
Jessie then moved to MIAMI, FL. where he met my mother, Wilma
R. WEISS. Wilma was born July 12, 1942 in
PHILADELPHIA, PA but left there when she was almost 2 years old.
Her parents moved to MIAMI, FL. in DADE
Co. where she was actually raised.
Wilma met Jessie on Feb. 3, 1960 and
they were married on Feb. 15, 1960 in DADE Co., FL.
*A SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT NAOMI
My sister Naomi would like some help from anyone who is able.
She is searching for a daughter she gave up for adoption at the time of birth.
The daughter will be 22 years old as of February 15, 2001.
The only information she has so far is:
Date of birth: February 15, 1979.
Time of birth: 5:21pm. | |
Place of birth: Broward Gen. Hosp. (Ft. Lauderdale, FL.).
Weight: 7lbs. 12oz. | |
Adoption Attorney: Theodore M. Trushin (now deceased).
His office at the time was located in North Miami, FL.

My sister's name at the time of the adoption was listed as Naomi
Ruth Lindsay aka Naomi Ruth Schmidt (Our step-fathers surname, he never legally adopted us) |
Naomi is registered with the
National Registry but at this time no match has been found. This is all of the
information that we have.
If anyone has access to locating people it would be greatly
appreciated if you could help her in this matter.
Not a day goes by that she doesn't think about her and
the sacrifice she made.

Jessie and Wilma
divorced June 1967 in DADE Co.. FLORIDA.
Jessie remarried July 07, 1967. He married Ledia
Regina HORTA who was born Sept. 07, 1944 in CUBA.
Jessie and
Ledia divorced in PALM BEACH. Co., FLORIDA on Aug.
07, 1980.
That was some of my more recent LINDSAY clan!
Let's go back to the earliest "LINDSAY's" I know,
starting in RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
According to the Burial or Record of Death For Richard Mack Lindsay:
Richard Mack LINDSAY was born July
04, 1870 in RICHMOND, VA. He had a brother named William
and 2
sisters, Annie and Lilly. Richard had
worked for the ILLINOIS CENTRAL RAILROAD as a car inspector.
He lived
in LITTLE ROCK, AR. from about 1900-1920.
Richard Mack LINDSAY, Sarah, Charles, Jessie and Helen all came to Florida, Abt. 1920-1925. He married Sarah Ellen LACKEY who was born in CAIRO, IL., ALEXANDER County, Mar. 20, 1873. She died May 8, 1953 in DeSOTO Co., FLORIDA. Richard Mack died Nov. 11, 1943 in NOCATEE, FL., DESOTO Co. At the time of his death his brother William was living in MAYSVILLE, KY. and his sisters Annie LINDSAY (SIMPSON) and Lillian LINDSAY KNUCKLES? were both living in TEXAS. Richard's death certificate said that his father was Mack LINDSAY and that his mother was unknown. The imformant's signature was Charles LINDSAY, Richard's son.
After Richard died Sarah Ellen LACKEY LINDSAY remarried on Aug. 2, 1949 in DeSOTO Co., FLORIDA. She married John BROWNING.
Both Richard Mack LINDSAY and Sarah Ellen LACKEY-LINDSAY-BROWNING are buried at JOSHUA CREEK CEMETERY in ARCADIA, FLORIDA.
According to the Burial or Record of
Death and Obituary For Sarah Ellen-Lackey-Lindsay-Browning:
At the time of Sarah Ellen LACKEY-LINDSAY-BROWNING's
death she had daughters Mrs. Julia GAY, VILLA RIDGE, IL.,
PULASKI County, Mrs. Lola ELLIS, CAIRO, IL.,
Mrs. Helen CREWS, ARCADIA, DeSOTO
Co., FL. and a step-daughter, Mrs. Inna ALBRITTON, ARCADIA,
DeSOTO Co., FL.; 2 sons Charlie LINDSAY, NOCATEE,
DeSoto Co., FL. and Jessie LINDSAY, ARCADIA,
FLORIDA.
I'm not sure exactly when or where Richard Mack LINDSAY and Sarah Ellen LACKEY were married.
He then married:
2.) Annie Mae MERCER, on Dec. 05, 1936. Annie
Mae was born and raised in WAUCHULA, FL., HARDEE
County.
Jessie and Annie Mae LINDSAY had 3 sons:
Jessie James, Sr. and Annie Mae divorced in Sept. 05, 1950 in HARDEE Co., FL.
Jessie James LINDSAY, Sr., then married:
3.) Lois Elizabeth FRYE in 1951,
in ORANGE Co., FL. Lois was born in 1923.
They had 3 sons all born in BARTOW, FL., POLK County:
Jessie James, Sr. and Billie Joe died tragically on Jan. 02, 1967 in a drowning accident at LAKE BLUE in POLK Co., FLORIDA.
Let's go to
the MERCER Family who've been in FLORIDA since before 1850.
John MERCER is believed to have been born in ENGLAND
in 1818 and came to FLORIDA in 1830. He
died
somewhere between 1864-1870. Census records of 1850 show
him and his family living in HAMILTON Co., FL.
(ITCHPOES Precint) in the northern most part of the state near GA. He
married Sarah Ann SUMMERALL in
WARE Co., Georgia. Sarah was born in c.
1820 in the State of Georgia.
The 1860 HILLSBOROUGH Co., FL. census shows Sarah
MERCER being a widow with the same children but
with the addition of 5 more. They had a total of 11 children, all who
were born in FLORIDA.
Their childen were:
According to the
South Florida Pioneers, July 1976 edition, issue #9 page 15 it
say's that Alex MERCER, Sr. is listed among others that
are buried at SWEETWATER Cemetery in HARDEE County. I've
visited the cemetery in 1993 and found several unmarked graves among the
MERCER's buried there but could not find a marked grave with his name on it.
Frederick seems to have died
because he only shows up clearly in the 1860 HILLSBOROUGH Co. census. I've never seen him
after that, and no marriage records either.
Alexander married Sarah Jane (FOUX?) in POLK Co., FL., Apr.16,
1869, according to the LDS, but on my visit to POLK County
Courthouse there records had them applying for their license on Apr. 12, 1871
and getting married Apr. 15, 1871.
I question Sarah Jane's spelling of her last name. The LDS has her last name spelled "FUOX", POLK Co. records spell it "FOUX" and their son Charlie MERCER's death certificate has it spelled "FEWOX", (I'm not sure which spelling is correct).
Adam
was married four times in all. First he married Mary POSEY,
June 25, 1873 in MANATEE Co., which ended in
divorce. Then he married Francis "Fanny" PRINE nee KEEN
at PINE LEVEL in MANATEE Co. on July
25, 1880.
Francis PRINE had been married 3 times before
this marriage. Francis PRINE's maiden name was "KEEN"
. She was born Oct. 12, 1846 in COLUMBIA Co.,
FL.
Her parents, James Mitchell KEEN and Apssilla
McCULLOUGH were both born in GEORGIA.
Francis KEEN's first marriage was to
Jacob John WHIDDEN, July 20, 1860 or James
J. WHIDDEN , Aug.11, 1860 in FLORIDA. There
are actually 2 records. They may be the same person. She had a son named William
Jehue WHIDDEN born in 1863. Francis married William
H. WEBB, Dec. 05, 1865 in HILLSBOROUGH
Co., FL. They had a daughter named Mary Ella WEBB born Sept.
08, 1864 in HILLSBOROUGH County.
Francis married John B. PRINE aka
"Jackson" PRINE in 1868 in
KEYSVILLE, FL., in HILLSBOROUGH County. John
B. PRINE was born in 1842 in LOWNDES Co., GEORGIA.
They had 6 children:
John PRINE, Sr. was killed on Aug. 07, 1878. Trial transcripts from the MANATEE Co. Historical Society records say that John PRINE's step-son Jehue WHIDDEN may have killed him. John is buried, GARDNER Cemetery, HARDEE County.
The 1885 Census also shows 2 orphan's living with them, both girls, Hettie who was born in 1874 and Cora born in 1880. Hettie was Adam's daughter from his first marriage with Mary POSEY.
Francis K. MERCER died on Dec. 19, 1919 and is buried at GARDNER Cemetery in GARDNER, HARDEE Co., FLORIDA. Adam remarried 2 more times after Francis passed away.
He married Martha E. STILLWELL on Mar. 10, 1921 and then Clara MOORE on Apr. 14, 1923. Both marriages were in DESOTO County.
Adam died on Jan. 10, 1925 and is also buried in GARDNER Cemetery, next to Francis KEEN-MERCER.
Children of James W. MERCER and Salatheil BETHEA:
Charles MERCER is my great-great grandfather...Now let's see some of his descendents.
They had 8 children:
Lizzie is the daughter of
Alexander McINNIS and (Mattie FORREST?/Martha Ann DICKS?)
Mattie's maiden name is listed as (FORREST)
on Lizzie McINNIS MERCER's death certificate. It also says Mattie's
place of birth was in PELHAM, GEORGIA.
My grandmother Annie Mae MERCER LINDSAY was the informant on the death
certificate. I found a marriage in IRWIN Co., GEORGIA,
between Alexander McINNIS and Martha Ann DICKS that took place Nov. 29,
1874, but I don't believe this to be them.
I definitely found them in the DECATUR Co., GEORGIA,
1910 census. Alexander McINNIS is listed as being 58
years old and his wife Mattie is 44. It also has both their
children listed as Elizabeth, 8 and Neal 5 both being
born in GEORGIA.
Alexander McINNIS was born in Scotland,
Mar. 16,1852. He came to AMERICA in 1870
and became a naturalized citizen in 1874. (Mattie
was a nickname for Martha back then. So I'm not 100% completely positive at this writing
which one she is or if they're the same person.)
Alex MERCER died June 11, 1941
in ARCADIA, FL., DESOTO Co.
Alex is buried at GARDNER Cemetery, HARDEE Co.
without a headstone or a marker. The family along with his death certificate are my
sources. Lizzie died in a tragic car accident that killed over half of
her children on Old BRADENTON Rd. which is now called State Rd. 70. They
were returning home from her Uncle Bill and Victoria MERCER
ALBRITTON's place in MYAKKA CITY, FL. They died
Aug. 09, 1941 only 2 months after Alex MERCER died.
Their all buried together at GARDNER Cemetery, HARDEE
Co.,FL.
Alex MERCER and Lizzie McINNIS
MERCER had 9 children:
Jack served in the Navy
during W.W. II aboard the ship U. S. S. Miantonomah.
On Sept. 25, 1944 on the coast of LeHAVRE, FRANCE
the ship hit a GERMAN mine. Jack was in the
vicinity of the explosion and killed. The ship and his personnel effects were lost at sea
with no chance of recovery. Jack was buried at the U. S. Army Cemetery, ST. ANDRE,
FRANCE.
