This All Happened To Me!
Picture this! You're having a leisurely Saturday
morning breakfast with your family. Now imagine picking up
your local paper and there on the front page is your picture
along with a story of criminal charges
!! Well, that's what happened to me and I can assure
you that I was shocked. My name is Sandy Musser and I've decided
to set up this web page to explain what happened to me and
how our justice system operates. I've also written a book
entitled TO PRISON WITH LOVE
which explains the horrendous experience
in detail. What exactly was my "crime" and what did I do to
deserve this absurd travesty of justice??
Believe it or not, I was indicted by the federal government and sent to prison for my work of reuniting families. Now I know that sounds outrageous, but that's exactly what my national organization, The Musser Foundation , was doing. We had reunited over 500 families who had been separated because of adoption, divorce, foster care or war-torn years. We even had the opportunity to reunite three sets of twins on the Maury Povich Show in the fall of 1992.
In March of 1993, the federal government indicted me for the work we were doing. They called it a "conspiracy to defraud the government of confidential information" because of sealed adoption records. I was investigated for 3 1/2 years by an investigator, similar to Ken Starr, before finally being charged with 39 felony counts. Why?? I'm still wondering that myself, but many of my closest cronies tell me it's because I was too outspoken about an archaic institution that is desperately in need of reform - so they refer to me as a "political prisoner."
They may have been right because 60 Minutes, Dateline & A&E cared enough to pick up the story. Then my friends jokingly remind me - "You asked for it, Muss - you always said you would go to prison for a cause you believed in!" Well, I HAD made that comment and I meant it. I went to trial, was convicted and sentenced to federal prison. And here's an interesting side note - my charge to the jury was 92 pages long compared to O.J's 67 pages!! (Now you know what a danger I was to society!)
But there were a lot of lessons to be learned along the way - lessons about the way our justice system does things, about "plea bargains" (otherwise known as 'let's make a deal!'), pitting friend against friend, and all the kind of stuff that I never really understood before until I experienced it first-hand!
This book will touch your life in one way or another; if not directly, than surely someone close to you. It speaks of the dire need for adoptees to have their constitutional rights restored; the need for prison reform; and surviving mental illness. It's about life, love, pain and joy and is written straight from the heart. If you have an opportunity to read it, it is my prayer that you will
