FOR A BRIDAL SHOWER
Have each guest bring a recipe, grocery or cleaning item to the shower.  Include a note on the shower invitation.
Buy an umbrella. Cut strings a tie from the frame. At the end of string tape on money - $1, $5 or $10's. Attach a little note for use on a rainy day.
Give a gift of a fire proof box for storing their valuables, especially the license.
Buy a sewing box and fill with the staples---scissors, thread (black and white), needles, etc.

Have a Tupperware party and let the bride pick out (ahead of time) what she would like, then the guests at your party can buy her what she wants.  Have a variety of price ranges.  Whomever has the party can write down what each person ordered so the bride will know what that person purchased for her and make out her thank you's accordingly.  Contributed by Susie - thanks
Mother of the bride or aunt or grandmother - clean out your cabinets an give your daughter things she will need that she never got at the shower.  For instance, that extra can opener you have, cookie cutters, salt and pepper shakers, etc.  Kills two birds with one stone.  Contributed by Susie - thanks
Buy a decoration for each holiday. If you know ahead of time, buy after the holiday is over (50% off) and save till shower.
FOR A GARDENER OR FRIEND
Buy coffee mugs at yard sales and put plants in them. Old fashioned kettles or bowls also work. Good way of recycling.
Buy a mug a yard sale and fill it with specialty tea, cocoa, or coffee.
Buy seed packs or bulbs as gifts.
FOR A CHRISTMAS PARTY OR SPECIAL PARTY
Buy shelled walnuts on sale after the holidays. Carefully with a screwdriver split the shell in two. Clean out the meat or nuts and use for baking. Dry the two pieces of shell. Paint the outside with gold paint (or color of your choosing). Put money, small gifts, little notes, etc inside one piece of shell. Use school glue and clue both pieces of shell together. Let dry. These make nice gifts. Put 4 or 5 painted nuts in a box. Be sure to give a nut cracker so the person can open the nut.
FOR A RETIREMENT PARTY
Have each guest bring $1 and make a money tree.
Find out their favorite things to do and buy gift certificates such as dining out, to a book store, garden shop, a nights hotel stay, etc.
GET WELL or SHUT-IN
Prepare a sunshine box of useful items such as a can of soup, a word search book, juice, a novel, tissues, magazine, cookies, etc.  Wrap them individually and let the person open one a day will recuperating.
