Sauter Sets Track Record With Pole in Memphis
Rookie Extends His Points Lead in Championship Chase with Record Run

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (September 8, 2001) - Rookie Johnny Sauter returned to Memphis Motorsports Park for the second time in his American Speed Association career on Saturday, and continued to add to his remarkable rookie season, capturing his fifth pole of the 2001 year and breaking the track record for Sunday's Rev Up Sports Drink 200 in the process. Sauter was one of two drivers to break the track record, and will start outside veteran Mike Garvey for Sunday's event. Ironically, the same two drivers tangled late in the event last week, with Garvey knocking Sauter out of contention for the win.

"I absolutely expected this pole," said Sauter, whose lap time of 22.758 sec. beat the old track record of 22.830 set by David Stremme last year. "The car has been awesome all day long. It really shows on a long run. Starting beside the LaFavre team will be interesting. When you mess with a bull, you get the horn.  I am going to race the way they want to race."

Sauter is one win away from tying the ASA ACDelco Series record for wins in a season. Sauter has captured the checkered flag on eight occasions in 2001, including at Chicago Motor Speedway, the only track the series runs that is longer than the .75-mile Me
mphis Motorsports Park.

Garvey will start in the front row for the sixth-time in 2001 after also breaking the track record with his lap of 22.780 sec. Garvey has captured three poles in 2001 and was just off of capturing his fourth after being quick in practice throughout the afternoon.

"I expected to beat the old track record," said Garvey. "Johnny just picked up more than I did. It didn't really matter going out early. The track was hardly different. I don't think the start should be a problem tomorrow."

Garvey's teammate Kevin Cywinski, who won in Minnesota last weekend, will start third after turning a lap of 22.924 sec. He was the only other driver to clock in under the 23 second mark. Butch Miller and defending race winner Joey Clanton will round out the top-five starters.

Activities for Sunday's Rev Up Sports Drink 200 get underway with spectator gates opening at 10 a.m. ASA's exclusive on-track fan autograph session will begin at 11, with pre-race ceremonies starting at 12:15 p.m. The Rev Up Sports Drink 200 is scheduled t
o go green at 1.
