(Karl Heinrich Ulrichs)
Translated for Paul J. Nash
Munich and Bremen each have a city square named after Ulrichs. In Hanover,
however, a controversy errupted when administrators wanted to put the street
near a street famous for its serial murderer of 24 men.
Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, a homosexual, even in the nineteenth century fought
for Gay and Lesbian rights in Hanover. "That's exactly why we should name a
street after Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, because the roots of the world-wide progress
of the emancipation of homosexuals lie in the region of Hanover," Heidi-Ritzer
Bruns said, supporting the proposal from Fraction Union '90/The Greens.
Hanover News (Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung)
After the Expo, when the area of the streetcar station is remodeled, the city of Hanover will also build a new street. It will be opposite the junction of Rundestrasse and Alte Celler Herrstrasse and will run diagonally across the station up to Hamburger Allee.
Although at this time it exists only on the drawing board, by a majority decision the city council of the city center has already given it a name. It is said to be named after Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, a homosexual, who even in the nineteenth century fought for Gay and Lesbian rights in Hanover. "That's exactly why we should name a street after Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, because the roots of the world-wide progress of the emancipation of homosexuals lie in the region of Hanover," Heidi-Ritzer Bruns said, supporting the proposal from Fraction Union '90/The Greens.
Ulrichs' life, however, was laden with setbacks...
Lukasz Batruch informed us:
Hannover, Germany: City Center Councilmembers voted Sept. 3, 2003, 14-1 to
name a street after Karl Heinrich Ulrichs. Members of a "homosexual emancipation
association" submitted the proposal for naming the street in 1999. Now (in 2005) street signs bearing the name Karl-Heinrich-Ulrichs-Str. have gone up. Select the four links for photos:
