On the Question of Terminology
By Kurt Hiller
Translated for
Paul Jerome Nash

"Homosexual" is abominable and vulgar in German.

"Homoerotic" is pure Greek but eliminates the sexual.

"Same-Sex" is linguistically incorrect, and "Same-Sexuality" is inferior and unclear.

Edward Carpenter's "Homogen" may be possible in English but not in German.

Heinrich Hössli used "Eros" and "The Love of Men."

Karl Heinrich Ulrichs used "Urning," "Urnin," "Urninde," "Dionin," "Uranodioning," "Uranian Love," "Uranism," and "Man-Masculine Love."

Magnus Hirschfeld used "Psychosexual Hermaphrodites," "Intersexual Variants," and "Sexual Blending."

Hans Blüher suggested "Inversion" and Inverted.

The words "Pet-Courtly Love" and "The Love Between Comrades" do not totally identify us.

"Pederast," "Boy-Love," and "Pederasty" are out of the question. Everyone understands "Pederast" to mean child molester.

"Followers of Socrates" includes men who love women.

"He is different" and "that way," and "The Others," are unscientific.

I suggest "Androtrope," Gynecotrope," "Androtropism," "Gynecotropism," "Androtropy," and "Gynecotropy."
