1977-84 Fleewood Brougham

1977-84 Fleetwood Brougham

The downsized Fleetwood Brougham rode on a wheelbase almost a foot shorter than its predecessor. As well as using an engine 1.2 liters smaller.

The 1978 Brougham got a new grill and tailfin design.

The Brougham changed little for 1979, it got a new grill design though.

In an effort to make its cars look bigger GM redesigned all their full-size cars. Their new lines were also more aerodynamically efficient, and this, combined with the new 6.0 liter engine, incereased fuel economy. Cadillac was also the first automaker to use digital fule injection in 1980. Cadillac also added a Fleetwood Brougham Coupe to the lineup. The model pictured above is the Fleetwood Brougham Coupe d'Elegance.

In 1981 the horrible V-8-4 was used. The concept of deactivting cylinders to save fuel was a good one, but this idea was too far ahead of its time, as not even GM had the technological resources to make the system work. However, the system could be deactivated, running the car on all 8 cylinders.

This is one of my favorite Cadillacs, with the V-8-6-4 deactivated that is.

A new powerplant was being used that was of a meager 4.1 liters. It only produced 125 horsepower.

For 1984, the Broughams got new gold lamp markers.
