Greyhounds: Brief Bio

Greyhounds are an ancient breed, and were companions to historic figures such as Cleopatra and Alexander the Great. At one time, ONLY nobility could own them (others risking it could pay with dismemberment or execution!) They are sighthounds, and hunt prey by sight, not smell. They can run up to 45-mph and are SPRINTERS. They start quick and end quick. While they make excellent walking and jogging companions, their endurance must be built up. They are a long-lived large breed---12 to 15 years plus. They must also never be left off lead outside of an enclosed area: this is a must, as something may catch their interest and their hunting instinct may kick in. They do not know dangers of streets or cars, etc. It's up to you to keep them safely on lead. THEY ARE INSIDE PETS ONLY! Due to their anatomical make up, they cannot be left outside for long periods of time. While they are a large breed, they take up little space in your home. They prefer a soft blanket, comforter, or doggie bed to lie on. They are generally quiet and non-disturbing to neighbors, which makes them good candidates for apartment dwelling (check with your landlord first!) Also, with proper parental responsibility they make excellent pets for children. Many also get along well with small animals. You should contact your nearest adoption program to find out more details on this. Greys newly retired are kennel trained, which means they know not to soil their personal living space, and thus they quickly learn from you where you expect them to "potty." Having been handled by humans and trainers since birth, they bond very quickly to their new humans. Voice commands such as NO are sufficient disciplinary means. They are far too sensitive for hitting and screaming.
