Guy Wood has one defined goal for the upcoming Monster Jam season...to become number one. And why not set his goals sky high, he has over 15 years experience driving monster trucks, and the powerful, well crafted truck BULLDOZER under his control. For Guy, this season is going to be one wild ride, and the only advice he has for himself is, "Run hard at all times."
Guy began his career as many in the industry do, from the world of mud racing. The shift to monster trucks was an easy one for Guy because of one simple fact. "I could run over stuff," said Guy. He first broke onto the scene in a monster truck he built called, ACES HIGH. After racing ACES HIGH, Guy went on to race HEARTLAND EXPRESS, TROPICAL THUNDER, HULK, BEARFOOT and Smokecraft Oberto RED JERKY MAKER.
Little did Guy know that the inspiration for his famed truck BULLDOZER was right before his very eyes. "At the time we were sponsored by a beef jerky company and driving RED JERKY MAKER. But, we wanted to create something fun and exciting for the kids, and BULLDOZER is the product of that idea," said Guy.
Once he had the idea the rest was easy...well not really. Guy sat down with a few colleagues and designed the BULLDOZER monster truck. They wanted the truck to look exactly like a bull. In fact, if you look closely enough at the 3D-body and custom paint job, it looks like the bull actually has hair. His bull even has a nose ring and blows smoke (co2) out of its nose!
Guy has had many distinct highlights over his storied career, but three stand out best in his mind. In 1992 at the Houston Astrodome, while driving BEARFOOT, Guy won first place for the world's longest jump. This jump not only gave him first place at the event, but it also landed him in the Guiness Book of World Records.
He is also very proud of taking second place, in 1997, on the televised "TNN Motor Madness" show in his BULLDOZER truck. But, the true highlight in Guys' life is something off the track. When asked what his career highlights are, without hesitation, he stated, "my greatest accomplishment would have to be my family."
Another accomplishment in its own right is the pleasant and graceful nature to which Guy always greets his fans during the pit parties, the show, and the autograph sessions. "I love meeting all of the people, especially the kids. I love to see the smile on their faces, and talk to them, and take pictures with them. We're like role models to them, and it is something they will remember for a long time."
Guy says, "being a monster truck driver isn't always easy, it's hard to be away from home all the time." When Guy isn't performing at monster truck shows he enjoys doing carpentry work. He's built most of the things around his home including a tree house for the kids, an addition to the home, and the shop in which they work on BULLDOZER in. He also admits he can't live without chocolate - Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are his all-time favorite.
Guy loves competing on the larger tracks on the series tour, especially Tampa, FL. "It's warm down there, it's a cool stadium with neat scenery. We like the bigger buildings cause then we can run our truck to its fullest capacity," said Guy. Be sure to catch Guy in action this season as he does his notorious smoke blow at his competitors in the BULLDOZER truck.
