#4 Carey Dorn D/M

2001: Carey Dorn began the season as a backup but evolved into a starting defensive midfielder for the CyberRays when the team was retooled from its slow start. A defender her entire college career, there were hints that Dorn's future with the CyberRays lay elsewhere when she played right flank midfield in the team's first exhibition game against Beijing F.C. on March 11 and she scored the CyberRays' first competitive goal in the seventh minute. Her first two starts were as a defender, but in the CyberRays' June 2 match against the San Diego Spirit, she played her first WUSA game at midfield marking Spirit M Julie Foudy. With the exception of one more game as a defender when D Dianne Alagich suffered her season-ending knee injury, Dorn was a defensive mid starter for the rest of the season. With Dorn on the field, the CyberRays outscored opponents 22-14, a plus-minus rating of +8, tied for 11th in the WUSA. Opponents outscored the CyberRays 9-5 with Dorn on the bench.

Previous experience: Dorn played with the U.S. under-21 team in 2000 on a tour of France. She was the mainstay of the Husky defense in her four years at UConn. She played in 92 games, making 82 starts, recording six goals and eight assists for 20 points. She was named second-team all-Big East Conference in 1998 and first team in 1999, the same year she was named second-team all-American. In 1997 she helped the Huskies to the final four and an upset of Notre Dame in the semifinals.
