#12 Michelle French M/D

2001: Michelle French started 20 of 21 matches for the Washington Freedom to rank third on the team, behind Jen Grubb and Lindsay Stoecker, in minutes played with 1,735. She led the team with five assists, and with her one goal, she ranked fourth on the Freedom in scoring with seven points. In Washington's July 7 match against the Atlanta Beat, won 3-2 by Atlanta, French pounced on the rebound from Pretinha's shot in the 31st minute and threaded a shot between two defenders to give the Freedom a 2-1 lead. Playing at San Diego on Aug. 1, French assisted on both Freedom goals as Washington erased a 2-0 deficit to tie 2-2.

Previous experience: Named to the roster for 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup residency camp in Florida following a stellar senior season at the University of Portland. Called in to the full national team for the first time for the two matches against England - the first of which was played at Spartan Stadium - and earned her first cap against England in her home stadium at Portland on May 11, 1997. A member of the U.S. under-21 team from 1994-1999 and was captain her last three years in the Nordic Cup, helping the United States to a championship in 1997 in Denmark, second place in 1998 in Holland, and to another title in 1999 in Iceland. She was a four-year starter at Portland and appeared in three NCAA final fours.

Personal: Michelle Ann French ("Frenchie"). Born in Fort Lewis, Wash. Graduated in 1999 from the University of Portland with a degree in Sociology and was an academic all-American. Father Terry is a dispatcher, mother Jeannine is a retail merchandiser.
