I am a poet, freelance writer (news & features), and I also write short stories, of a "mostly!" autobiographical nature about growing up a Mexican American in South Texas and such.
I'm one of the founders and directors of Art That Heals, Inc.
Daniel García Ordaz was born in Houston, Texas and raised in the Rio Grande Valley of deep South Texas. He is a freelance writer and photographer, painter, and songwriter. He is a founder of Art That Heals, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to the mission of encouraging cultural literacy in the Rio Grande Valley by promoting the arts and using art to help bring an end to the AIDS pandemic. He is a veteran of the Armed Services, having served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserves as a Hospital Corpsman, and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from The University of Texas-Pan American. He lives in Donna, Texas with his wife, Gina, and their children and continues to write poetry and short stories, sing, and spend time in front of a crowd as often as he can.
El Zarape Press presents its first collection of poetry by the eclectic Daniel García Ordaz, The Poet Mariachi. “You Know What I’m Sayin’?” is a celebration of the common experience of language and culture transfiguring time and place, and juxtaposing the politics of urban hip-hop America with the sociology of rural deep South Texas, a retelling of ancient history sung by a contemporary voice. Through the use colorful and literary use of language this poet speaks about the human experience through lyrics ranging from the humorous to the serious, from the academic, to the silly, leaving the reader with a familiarity with the sensual language around them, and, for some, with a sudden urge to run out and find some great Mexican food!
