William S. Burroughs was introduced on "Saturday Night Live" by John Belushi as "the greatest living writer" in the 1970s. He was not a local writer, per se, but he did spend some time in the Rio Grande Valley in the 1940s as a farmer. See Dr. Robert Johnson's entry for more info.
Burroughs included a section on the Valley in his book, Junky.
