Eric John Behague Wakefield

Eric Wakefield was my much-loved grandfather. He was born in 1913 and spent his childhood in Sawston, Cambridgshire. Eric attended the Sawston school and it was here that he first met Phyllis Morley although they were not to notice one another until a cricket match when Eric was 15.

Wedding of Eric & Phyllis Wakefield 1939Eric and Phyllis married at the parish church, Sawston on 27th May 1939 and Eric then left to serve in the Royal Navy.

On Eric's return to civilian life the couple took over a newsagent's business in North Road, Whittlesford where the family, which by now included their first child Margaret, settled. Their son Derek was born in 1946. Eric continued to deliver the papers until his retirement in June 1978 when more time could be spent in his garden.

Eric and Phyllis celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in 1999 with a family party in Whittlesford.

Eric Wakefield 1999 Eric John Behague Wakefield died on 4th May 2002, aged 89.
