Goatshead Brewery - Abbeys page

Im glad you asked. What does a goat and beer have in common? They both take a lot of care. You have to feed them and water them. And after a while they mature and you can enjoy them. Feed them you ask, yes, goats you have to be feed like anything if you expect them to live. Beer will not ferment unless you feed it yeast. A goat will not grow unless you feed it goat food. To the beer part though. I like to create a tastey beer but without the right yeast it will not ferment. Fermintation takes place when you put yeast into wort and let it set for 3 to 5 day's so it can break down or feed on the surgars in the wort. The fresher your yeast the better. As it ferments it breaks down the surgars or malt's in the wort and it changes to a percentage of alcohol. Which can be controlled by how much malt verses what kind of yeast at what tempeture you ferment.

First thing I think of when I go to brew a batch of Goatshead ale. When I use 3 oz. of pellet, I try to keep the alpha acidity around 4.5 or lower. I do go for a higher acidity level when I make certain ales, let's say Challenger @ 7.2 or more for a brown ale. Picking the right hops for a recipe is really easy as long as you use a little common sense. Try to find a cross refernce chart and experiment a little. Most top fermenting ales I make, are hopy in taste because that is what I like, but remember everyones taste are different, so keep it mild at first when you are making a batch for friends to try!
Growing Hops, it's easy and fun.
I will sit in my backyard on a sunny summer day under ny plant's for shade. Last year I grew 1 Willamette plant and 1 Cascade plant. I used a 1/2 gallon of water a day on each plant in hot weather and cool days 1/2 gallon for both. Once a week I would put Miricle Grow on them to give them a little boost. They grew to about 12 feet my first year with yeilding about 24 cones a piece. I will add more about my growing experience with day's to come.

Yeast Storing and Feeding

Yeast is yeast is yeast, right? Wrong! Ive started out using 8 grams of dry packeged yeast to using Wyeast and storing it to use over and over again. I like Wyeast 1056 or a 1089.
