BACKGROUND TO DANIEL

The country of Israel that God had set up had repeatedly turned away from Him and was given over to idolatry. The southernmost portion, Judah, including the capital, Jerusalem, maintained the faith, but was following the same path. This is the story of a Judean king approximately 100 years before the events of Daniel, about 701 B.C.

"In those days was Hez-e-ki-ah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Set thine house in order, for thou shalt die, and not live. Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the Lord, saying, I beseech thee, O Lord, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hez-e-ki-ah wept sore. And it came to pass, before Isaiah was gone out into the middle court, that the word of the Lord came to him, saying, Turn again, and tell Hez-e-ki-ah the captain of my people, Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the Lord. And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake. And Isaiah said, Take a lump of figs. And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered. [A boil or lump that causes certain death was probably cancer] And Hez-e-ki-ah said unto Isaiah, What shall be the sign that the Lord will heal me, and that I shall go up into the house of the Lord the third day? And Isaiah said, This sign shalt thou have of the Lord, that the Lord will do the thing that he hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees? And Hez-e-ki-ah answered, It is a light thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees: nay, but let the shadow return backward ten degrees. And Isaiah the prophet cried unto the Lord: and he brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down in the dial of Ahaz.

At that time Ber-o-dach-bal-a-dan, the son of Bal-a-dan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present unto Hez-e-ki-ah: for he had heard that Hez-e-ki-ah had been sick. And Hez-e-ki-ah hearkened unto them, and showed them all the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointment, and all the house of his armor, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hez-e-ki-ah showed them not. Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hez-e-ki-ah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And Hez-e-ki-ah said, They are come from a far country, even from Babylon. And he said, What have they seen in thine house? And Hez-e-ki-ah answered, All the things that are in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not showed them. And Isaiah said unto Hez-e-ki-ah, Hear the word of the Lord. Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried into Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the Lord. And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon." 2 Kings 20:1-18 (Also found in Isaiah chapters 38 & 39)

Hez-e-ki-ah was healed by God through herbs to remind us that the healer of our infirmities is the God of nature, our Creator. If we are to expect to be healed by God we must do all that we can to live by the laws or commands of our creator including the laws of health and diet.

Upon his recovery he was visited by representatives of Babylon. They came to hear of the mighty God, that could heal the sick; but he showed them only earthly treasure. He lost his opportunity to give them of the treasure of Heaven. God gave the king and his son time to repent and change but his son "went after the abominations of the heathen" (See: 2 Kings 21:2-3; 24:1-4, Jer. 15:4)

"At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it; If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them. And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it; if it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them." Jer. 18:7-10. They continued in rebelling against God until King Josiah and because of his revival and reforms the Lord promised that he would not see the destruction of Jerusalem (2 Kings 23:21-25, 2 Kings 20:19,20) but His children stubbornly rebelled against God and refused to repent (2 Kings 24:8,9,11,13,17,19,20).

Nabopolassar, the father of Nebuchadnezzar was the Assyrian General who took Babylon and later revolted and destroyed Nineveh, the capitol of the Assyrian empire. He formed an alliance with Media (north of Babylon) by a marriage of his son, Nebuchadnezzar, to a Median princess. Nebuchadnezzar later defeated Egypt at Carchemish (Jeremiah 46:2-6). Judah sought help from Egypt (Isa. 31:1,3). Thus the Attack against Judah and Jerusalem was really against the Egyptian influence in the region (Isa. 30:1,2,7-15). It was about a thousand mile journey from Babylon by the usual route.

DANIEL CHAPTER 1

DAN 1:1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.

DAN 1:2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

The city was retaken two more times by king Nebuchadnezzar. (2 Kings 24:13; 25:8-15) They took the rest of the vessels of the temple then. This was predicted about 100 years before "Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried to Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the Lord" Isa. 39:6.

"Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain." Ps. 127:1. Israel was warned many times that they would be led captives in heathen lands because of their idolatry and abominations. (See Lev. 26:33-35, Deut. 28:64, 1 Kings 14:15, Amos 5:27, 2 Kings 22:17, 24:1-4, 2 Chr. 33:1-10; 36:5-21, Isa. 5:13, Hosea 4:6-10). If they would have repented and worshiped the true God, then God would have turned their enemies back (See Jer. 18:8) and they would have lasted forever. "But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, or receive instruction. And it shall come to pass, if ye diligently hearken unto me, saith the Lord, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but hallow the Sabbath day, to do no work therein; Then shall there enter into the gates of this city kings and princes sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they, and their princes, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and this city shall remain for ever." Jer. 17:23-25

No foe is more dangerous than the friend who has taken the place of God in our trust and confidence. But it is all too natural for us to look to our fellow men for sympathy and uplifting, instead of looking to God. In His mercy and faithfulness, God often permits those in whom we place confidence to fail us, in order that we may learn the folly of trusting in man. So Egypt failed to save them. What good did this accomplish? Israel spread the truth of God to the Gentiles as they were supposed to (Isa. 49:6, 42:6-8) though it was as slaves. And they turned back to God for help instead of false gods and never again returned to open pagan idol worship.

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah: Immediately after Nebuchadnezzar's victory over Judah his father, with whom he shared the throne, died and Nebuchadnezzar returned home to secure the throne. This was in 607 B.C. This being Nebuchadnezzar's ascension year they didn't count it as his 1st year. The year of a king's reign was numbered from the beginning of the legal years the king welcomed in.

- Dad's 3rd Yr - Dad's 4th Yr - Son's 1st Yr - Son's 2nd Yr

Jan----------Dec+Jan----x-----Dec+Jan---------Dec+Jan--------Dec+

Year Dad Died

Son's Ascension Year

(+)=beginning of legal year (technically not Jan 1)

So if the old king died during his fourth year it would be referred to as the old king's fourth year or as the new king's ascension year till the new king welcomed in the new year. Then it would be said to be the new king's first year even if he had been on the throne for most of the previous year. So when Jer. 25:1 says "in Nebuchadnezzar's 1st year and Jehoiakim's 4th this is the following year and not a contradiction with this text in Daniel.

DAN 1:3 And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes;

Taken CaptiveDAN 1:4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favored, and skillful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

They were teenagers for these "children" had attained some wisdom and skill in knowledge and understanding.

Were they EUNUCHS? This is apparently the fulfillment of the prophecy in 2 Kings 20:18 (pg. 10). Yes it is true that the children do suffer for the sins of their parents (Ex. 20:5, pg. 25). We inherit both good and bad from our families and our communities. "For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs of men: which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it." Matt. 19:12. We inherit both good and bad from our families and communities. A happy marriage would have been an extreme burden and nearly impossible under the circumstances, this may be one reason why God allowed the burden to be removed while in a hostile pagan land.

DAN 1:5 And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.

DAN 1:6 Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

DAN 1:7 Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.

In bygone days people's names represented something, like todays Cook, Carpenter, BlackSmith, Knight, John's son, Baker, Shepherd, Farmer etc.

Daniel meaning: God is my judge was changed to: Belteshazzar- meaning: the keeper of the hid treasure of Bel

Hananiah-from: the Lord is gracious to me to: Shadrach- the inspiration of Aku (the moon god)

Mishael- from: Who is like God to: Meshach- Who is like Aku (the moon god)

Azariah- from: Who Jehovah helps to: Abednego- Servant of Nebo (the shining fire or morning star)

Why did they change their names? It was a sign or mark of authority to have the power to change a name. It also hid their national distinction in an effort to merge them all into their own religion. The Babylonians believed that a change of name changed a persons future life, giving them a new start. But they were powerless to change their hearts. God changed peoples names after their change of heart for example Abram to Abraham, Saul to Paul, Jacob to Israel.

DAN 1:8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

This is the big decision that was the guiding light of their lives. The approval of God was dearer to him than the favor of the most powerful king, dearer than life itself. "Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen." Isa. 43:10 "Them that honor me I will honor" 1 Sam. 2:30 "Keep thy heart with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life." Prov. 4:23 "Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him;.." Ps. 37:5 "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever." Ps. 111:10 (Job 28:28) "Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean [common] men." Prov. 22:29. This is quite a promise to those who are faithful in little things. Their strength of character was the result of decided, determined, committed, dedicated purposes of heart to do the right thing because it is right, leaving the results with God. They knew how to say NO to temptation. This is why God spoke so highly of Daniel in Ezek. 14:20. We, too often, are "double minded" James 4:8 hence we are not blessed as we have not made up our mind.

This is a powerful testimony to their parents for they undoubtedly followed the counsel to "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Prov. 22:6.

Bottles of Beer on the Wall

Why no wine? God has promised not to withhold any good thing from his people "No good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly." Ps. 84:11. Yet God has frequently forbidden His servants from drinking wine. "Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his color in the cup, when it moveth itself aright" Prov. 23:31. We are admonished not to even look upon it, much less taste it. "Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations:" Lev. 10:9. "Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:" Prov. 23:20. "Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? Who hath contentions? Who hath babbling? Who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine." Prov. 23:29,30, "Neither shall any priest drink wine, . . ." Ezek. 44:21, "And the angel of the Lord appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: . . . . and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing:" Judges 13:3,4-7 "It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink;" Prov. 31:4 (Also see Deut. 29:6, 1 Sam. 1:14, Rom. 14:21, Jer. 35:5-14). These commands must be because of these wines' intoxicating effect. The Bible also speaks of wine as unfermented juice as well. Thus saith the Lord, "As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one saith, Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it:. . ." Isa. 65:8. Wine straight from the press cannot be fermented yet it is referred to as wine. (Jer. 48:33, Neh 13:15) Even today "apple cider" can mean either fermented or unfermented apple juice and so the context must decide which type of wine is referred to in the scriptures.

We are told not to destroy the fruit of the grape for it is good. (Isa. 65:8) and fermentation is the decay or spoilage of its sugar, so how did they prevent their juices from 'turning'? By boiling it down or concentrating it, for in order to ferment it requires a certain amount of water to be present. This is why dried fruit does not spoil. This is implied in "thy wine mixed with water" Isa. 1:22 and "the new wine is dried up" Joel 1:10 {when water dries up it is gone but when wine dries up it is dehydrated.}

Since "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging; and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise." Prov. 20:1 in that we are told not to even tempt ourselves by so much as looking on it, it is considered so "evil" that in the Old Testament God's punishment for a drunk was death (Deut. 21:20,21) and a woe is pronounced upon any that help start another down the path of drinking (Hab. 2:15). We too should chose not to defile ourselves with alcoholic drinks.

Clearly the use of intoxicating drinks is never commanded nor recommended in the Bible. It is not excused as a necessary evil and its strict abstinence is nowhere condemned. Many texts commend abstinence and some command it. There is nothing in the Scriptures which disagrees with the principles of total abstinence and nothing which sustains moderate drinking. Hence the Bible agrees with science and common sense in denouncing the use of intoxicating liquors. In the face of these facts, can any of us continue to indulge in the use of wine in any degree whatever? For more of your questions answered on this subject see APPENDIX C [Wine in The Bible] APPENDIX C

Why was their diet such a big deal? "And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God." 2 Cor. 6:16-7:1.

"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are." 1 Cor. 3:16,17 (Also see 1 Cor. 6:19,20) "And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible." 1 Cor. 9:25.

The people in the last days will be required to go through similar experiences which require the keenest spiritual eyesight, therefore God asks them to give up that which will in any way check the flow of the Holy Spirit through the mind.

Our physical health clearly affects the mind and spiritual perceptions. Thus self-control of the appetite lies at the foundation of every reform. Indulgence of appetite was the first great sin of the human race (Gen. 3:6). Jesus was tested more than we can be when he fasted for 40 days in the wilderness and His victory, His strength and grace is offered to us (Phil. 4:13).

Why not defile with meat? Would eat pulse? It was a risky thing for these slaves to deny their high honor and privileges of eating from the king's table. It was considered an insult. No doubt the rest of their "God Worshiping" friends went with the flow and warned them not to rock the boat and make waves, but they didn't follow the crowd but rather followed God's law even at these high stakes.

The pagans did dedicate their food to idols but obviously a big point is made of not eating any flesh food for he asks for pulse, the same word used to describe man's original diet.

"And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, [pulse] which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat." Gen. 1:29 (Since the King James Version refers to these "herbs" & "fruit" as MEAT we can see that "meat" is used as another word for food in this version of the Bible.) "and thou shalt eat the herb of the field" Gen. 3:18 "For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown [pulse] to spring forth:" Isa. 61:11 Later God made a distinction between "clean" and "unclean" animals (Gen. 7:2,3,8,9) and permitted the eating of these animals (Gen. 9:3,4) under careful restrictions. A list is given in Lev. 11:1-12 "And the LORD spake ... saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts .... Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of....he is unclean unto you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you. They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination." Specifically the pig "And the swine, ... It is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase." Deuteronomy 14:8.

The next foremost qualification in order for it to be considered edible or "clean" was: "It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings, that ye eat neither fat nor blood." Lev. 3:17 even for non-Jews "And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of blood; I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off from among his people." Lev. 17:10. Eating food that had blood in it was a big deal. "and the blood thereof shall be wrung out" Lev. 1:15 (Also 5:9). Paul says the same thing in the New Testament to the Gentiles in Acts 15:20 "But we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood. (Also verse 29 and Acts 21:25).

So why these strict standards about eating any meat that has not had all the blood immediately "wrung out"? Because the blood keeps the tissue producing waste and it fills with these cells waste products. It is also the means by which colon bacteria swarm through the body and start breaking down the tissue. Believe it or not this is why most beef is refrigerated for four weeks with the blood still in it, to "tenderize" it or to give the bacteria a chance to break the flesh down. If this is done for six weeks then you have meat which can be cut with a fork. If you will think about cutting your leg or arm muscle with the side of your fork, even if cooked, you will realize that it is the bacteria that eats through it, like Swiss cheese, that make it soft or tender. Even most of the flavor of meat is from the blood and waste of the cells (urea). Two ounces of a ten ounce steak is blood. This is why it is called red meat. (See The Missing Link in the Medical Curriculum by Dr. Jay M. Hoffman pgs 131-141)

Today food animals are often shut away from sunlight and fresh air, in many cases breathing an atmosphere and drinking water that would make us sick. If you've ever been downwind of a modern chicken house you know what I mean. They are fattened and receive no exercise. They are frequently fed antibiotics and chemicals which we can absorb when we eat their meat. Fish become contaminated by the filth dumped into the sea by large cities and swim into distant waters that appear safe. Meat is poorly inspected as the Food and Drug Administration cannot inspect much of it and much is inspected by the producers themselves. Cancers are just cut out and the rest of the meat is fed to us. Numerous documentaries have testified to the problems in the meat industry.

We know that God never withheld anything that was good for us for he promises us in Ps. 84:11 "No good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly." Therefore these things God restricted from our diet are not good for us to eat, as much of science now testifies. The flesh foods we have today are largely contaminated with the blood that has not been wrung out. Hence it is pink in the middle and brown when cooked, otherwise it would be an off white color. God has forbidden eating anything that has been contaminated by these things or even meat from sick animals (See Lev. 11:32-47) and it is not uncommon for animals to have slaughterhouse fever or large cancerous tumors. Since today they just cut the tumors out (the ones they can see) and due to the questionable healthy living conditions of these animals, by strict Biblical standards the meat on the market today is unclean.

DAN 1:9 Now God had brought Daniel into favor and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.

DAN 1:10 And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, "I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? Then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king."

DAN 1:11 Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

DAN 1:12 "Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.

DAN 1:13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants."

DAN 1:14 So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.

DAN 1:15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat.

DAN 1:16 Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.

Harvest Fruits Vegitables

OK! So what were they eating? What was this Pulse?

They chose the diet that God gave in the beginning (See Gen. 1:29, previous page). Thus Daniel's diet included more than just one thing. It consisted also of fruits, grains, nuts, and vegetables. Then, too, if we understand Gen. 9:3 correctly, the "green herb" itself must have been included in the diet requested. In other words, the menu for which Daniel asked and which he received was made up of cereals, legumes, fruits, nuts, and vegetables. A simple whole food, natural vegetarian diet of good variety, together with the universal drink for man and beast, clear water.

DAN 1:17 As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

Clearness of mind and strength of the body were the result of faithfulness to right ways of eating and drinking.

DAN 1:18 Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

DAN 1:19 And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

DAN 1:20 And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

This was a testimonial to following God's law especially his health laws in the face of public humiliation and death. The Babylonians had ridiculed the Hebrew God and gave credit to their gods for giving victory to them. But God could only give the correct understanding of Himself through those who obeyed and honored Him. Thus though Israel trusted in the arm of flesh (Egypt) and could not be an example of God to the world, these four were used by God to demonstrate to the Babylonians that Jehovah was the true God and not to be mocked.

It was the Jews' duty to spread the light God had given them to the world (Isa. 60:3-5) so what they had failed to do in times of peace, they must do in times of trouble.

DAN 1:21 And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.

Living into his 90's he outlived both the young king, many of his children and even his kingdom by this diet and the blessing of God. Direct compliance with the Bible requirements and faith in God will bring strength to both body and will. For more on diet see APPENDIX D [Diet in the Bible]. APPENDIX D

The contemporary prophets of Daniel were Ezekiel and Jeremiah. Ezekiel was younger then Daniel starting his writing when Daniel was about 40 and also a captive just outside of the capital city of Babylon. Jeremiah was older and lived in Jerusalem.
