Unfortunately, the most popular diagnosis pinned
on anyone who self injures is borderline personality.
Patients with this diagnosis are frequently treated
as outcasts by psychiatrists; in Trauma and Recovery,
Judith Herman reports that a psychiatric resident
who asked his supervising therapist how to treat
borderlines was told, "You refer them."

While there are many people who survive
With Boderline Personality Disorder
Not all of us have mutiple personalities
The number is far greater for
Those who cut and burn or in other ways injure.
Many of us don't take any medications.
Because we have a fear of choking on the pills.
Many clinitians tend to group all borderlines
Into the self-injury catagory.
Believing that if they aren't at the present time
Cutting they are in other ways self-injuring.
Such as Picking at scabs, Pulling out hair
Picking at acnee, burning with cigarettes,
Also it may be true that some
who self injure are looking for attention
There are many things that will
(trigger) make a person who is
prone to self-injury do this
Such as a person who was sexually abused
watches a program on television about an abused child
It will bring up memories about his/her own abuse
Or a person who disassociates may cut to make
the disassociation stop. Others inflict pain to feel it to punish themself. The pain from the cut makes a person who feels unreal feel. And with cutting we bleed And with bleeding the pain leaves Pain of hurts so bad there is no other way to make them go away. Other triggers can be anger
or panic, anxiety.
Self injury is a coping skill
We who injure know this. Self injury becomes a habit. A habit that I and many other people can't break So We Cut!
Though the scars are pretty and we
Do our best to make them remain as long as possible.
There are many who hide their scars
By cutting in secret in places we can cover
such as the stomach and the legs.
After we cut or burn we take care of the injury.
We put ointment on them, we put bandages on them.
We keep a large supply of bandages on hand.
Of course we all know how to apply steristrips.
We even put in our own stitches.
Why not, we have watched our own
doctors do it for us
Many, many times.
And we admire the scars, we compare each one
To the last.
We pull the scabs off daily.
So it leaves a deeper more noticeable scar.
We compare our scars to others who cut/burn.
We try to out due each other.
