From Catoosa Co Heritage book article 757:

"Memories of Jessie Amelia Reed" "I was born in a log house on my grandfather's farm (Tommy Reed), which was on a hill, back of what is now known as the J F Shirley homeplace. My family lived in this three room log house until some time in 1902, at which time my father bought a farm across the road from my grandparent's home, known as the Nathan Smith homeplace (1970 known as the B B Dawn homeplace), however my father purchased the property from Preston Spears. This farm had the first frame house built in that area, and could possibly have been one of the first frame houses built in the county. Nathan Smith was a Christian minister (then known as Campbellites) and his son, who worked in Washington, built this home for his father. NOTE: In the front yard of this home there are two graves: Mrs William Newton Reed (Elizabeth "Lizzie" Henderson) and her mother Mary Louise Smith Henderson, they are the daughter and granddaughter of Rev. Nathan C Smith.
When my family moved from the three room house into this spacious home, with extremely high ceilings, windows that could go up and down, porches, bedrooms for the girls and one for the brother, we were very happy. Though I was a small child, I well remember the move. On Jan 10, 1903 after we moved into the big house, a new baby was born to the family, and was named Bertha Dell. This big home was delightful for summer but in winter was heated with open fireplaces and I can now imagine it was never warm.
The house is occupied by a family by the name of B B Dawn, located near Reed's Cross Road on the U S Government Road from Fort Oglethorpe to Ringgold, Ga (Jemima R Shirley note: This house burned in the 1970's).
Another one of my memories, which was very frightening at the time, but now I look upon it as a delightful experience. One day this very tall, red skinned man came to our house, he had black hair, very straight and down to the neck, high cheek bones and piercing eyes, asking information about my grandfather. This man was an Indian, probably a Cherokee from the old Cherokee Country. His name was Charlie Mockingcraw. I remember how frightened of him I was and he placed his hand on my head and assured me no harm would come. He spent a night in the home of my grandparents, and my parents took us to our grandparents to "sit til bedtime" as was the custom then, to hear Charlie talk. After breakfast the next morning we were going to watch to see which way Charlie went, but as it is an Indian custom he magically disappeared, and they never knew where he went or what happened to him.
During the Civil War when my grandfather, Thomas Newton Reed, was away fighting for the cause of the Confederacy, along with all of his brothers, my grandmother was living on their farm doing all the chores as well as taking care of their children, trying to keep food for them. My father, Thomas Bartow Reed, and his twin brother, James Buckner Reed, were not more than a year old. My grandmother had a pig in a pen to fatten to kill for food, two yankee soldiers came, went to the pen, stabbed the pig and killed it with grandmother begging them not to take it as it was all she had for food. They took the pig but in their haste to get away they left the butcher knife with which they had stabbed the pig - my grandmother had the knife at the time of her death. Sometime in the early 1900's when there were reunions held at Chickamauga Park for Confederate as well as Federal soldiers (the Federal reunion was always held at Wilder's Monument) two well-dressed elderly men knocked at our door. My grandmother answered the call, and they introduced themselves as "Old Yankee Soldiers" and said they were looking for the family who lived at Reed's Cross Roads during the war who had twin baby boys. My mother told them her husband was one of the twins, and that the mother was deceased. They said they came back to make an apology and a peace offering, saying they were hungry and needed food. One of the men gave my mother a small pocket knife with ivory carved handles, which I now have in my possession.
The above ends the reminiscenses of Jessie Amelia Reed. She and I spent many happy hours working on our genealogy. Jessie was the daughter of Thomas Bartow Reed and Sarah Delilah Campbell Reed. She never married. She began her working career as a school teacher but accepted a position with the Railway Express Agency, retiring after 42 years of service. She died March 30, 1974, and was buried in Forest Hills Cemetery.

Notes for JAMES MARK "JIM" FULCHER:

From Catoosa Co Heritage book:

IN MEMORIAM
Another good man has been called home. On Tuesday morning, July 7, 1914, at one o'clock, the Angel of Death visited a peaceful home and claimed for his victim a husband and father. Mr. James M Fulcher was born June 24, 1854. Early in life he bacame a professed follower of Christ, joining the Methodist Church at Boynton. After a number of years he joined the Baptist Church, where he remained until the time of his death. He was happily married to Miss Laura Russell, and to them was born an only daughter, Laura.
For a number of years, Mr Fulcher was a faithful member of Boynton's I O O F and his presence will be greatly missed by the members of his lodge.
A large congregation gathered at the M E Church to pay their last respects, to their honored dead. The funeral services were conducted by Revs Bartow McFarland, Jim McFarland & R A Cliett. At the cemetery, the Oddfellows took charge of the body, using their usual impressive ceremony.
The deceased leaves, besides numerous friends, a wife and a daughter. Though he had not lived the allotted number of years, God saw fit to call him away from this dark world to a world bright with the glory of the Father, and though we mourn his departure, we rejoice because he has gone where sorrow and suffering are no more.
