- Chance to find a random artifact on the corpses of Dragon Flightleader, Great Wyrm, Dragon and the personally named dragon. Seems the chance is the same for all four types (checked it in Old Loeb's Cave). Same with the Crystal Dragons. - The "special" artifacts (Arcomage Chest, Vault of Time etc.) always respawn with the maps (Thanks to GP :-). - Mace of the Sun and Noblebone Bow have a fixed position and are too contained in the randoms pool. So it's possible to get two of them (and more, when the maps respawn). - Some results:
There is no special limit for the randoms. The random artifacts (total 31) are available until they are placed in some chest/treasure by entering the map (and of course finding them by looting dragons).
For example a party in the beginning can get 2 of 28 randoms in Ilsingore's Cave - one is already placed in the Ravenshore tree, one in the wall of Ogre Fort in Alvar and the third under the rock in Ironsand.
When all randoms are placed - in chests/treasure/looting dragons -, the later on visited locations don't contain artifacts, or if treasure, they are empty.
Seems all remaining randoms are placed in the treasure on the floor of Escaton's Palace.
If a map with undiscovered artifacts respawns, these artifacts are lost and it's impossible to get them thereafter. This may happen especially with the Dragon Cave in Garrote Gorge (respawn time 6 months).* There is a problem with the predetermined artifacts not matching the chests (same occurs with other chests):
One of the chests in Castle of Fire contained 3 artifacts, needed several reloads to get an arrangement where all matched the chest.
This too occured in Castle of Winds (maybe too in Chain of Fire where the chest sometimes has only 1 artifact).
Same with Eclipse. When I checked it, it had a chance of about 1 of 3 to be contained in the chest (14 possible positions, 10/11 of them actualized). Save before opening the chest, and if it's not present, reload and try again.
When entering a dungeon/map, the content of the chests (number of positions and items/money) is determined. The arrangement within the chest is done when opening it. If the determined content doesn't match the chest (items to big or arrangement unfavorable), one or more will be missing. By saving and reloading before opening the chest it is possible to get a better arrangement, where more/all is present.
The problem with random artifacts is that they are removed from the pool when determined for a chest. Even if they don't appear within this chest, it is not possible to get them thereafter.** To get access without fighting, use Invilibility when passing the guards (possible without Invisibility and two Saves/Reloads too). When you have reached the next dragons, saving and reloading turns the dragons to friendly (you must be far enough from the guards to have this result - moving within the critical area turns them hostile). Leave by townportal (approaching the guards - means entering the critical area when leaving will turn the dragons hostile again).
