The Jackson Gamers Build Things
A Ruined Church

Jim Pitts built a derelect 25mm. church ruin from Games Workshop "Ruins" sets.

Jim was inspired by a similar, but larger structure on the Terragenesis web site. Here he has glued the corner ruin sections together. There are three sets that GW makes, each set having two different corners. Jim purchased two different sets.

He made a base for the structure, cutting it out of a large sheet of 1/4" Foam-core board. He scribed with a sharp pencil, a pattern of "paving stones" into the foamcore, and he cut away some of the pager sheathing of the foam board to expose the rougher core. This simulates spots where the original stone flooring has been pried and recycled up by some thrifty peasant.

He glued the finished corner sections to the base, and added pieces of the "ruin" sections along with some small stones to the interior of the structure forming rough evidence where walls had once been. After the glue dried, a can of dark grey spray paint was used to provide a uniform base color.

When the paint was dry, Jim dry-brushed all of the masonry parts a lighter grey. After that dried, he used pure white to dry-brush the very topmost sections of the ruins. This simulates the weathering of the stone and just looks great!

A deep brown paint was brushed at the base of the stones to simulate dirt splashed up by rain. The same brown was used where the interior flooring was missing. Green was brushed on areas where the grass would grow.

When the green and brown were dry, Jim used full strength Tacky Glue to secure the green and brown flocking around the outside of the walls and the green "moss" flocking on the inside of the corner pieces.

Jim says that the foamcore base warped a slight bit from the "pull" of the coats of paint and glue on the top. He anticipates that a coat of paint on the bottom will flatten it out. We used this scenic piece in a game in early April 2000, and the warpage that he described was not readily evident.
