Turning Gauges
The size of the gauges can be ajusted to fit your playing space. There are some rules to consider when making ajustments.
- Gauge #1 should be twice the diameter of Gauge #3. Gauge #2 should be half-way in between.
- Mark your gauges out on paper or card stock and then make a "tick mark" every inch (25mm) around the outside edge. If you are going to play the game in centimeters, then ever 2.5 centimeters is close enough to an inch.
- Gauge #1 is for most southern ironclads. Maneuverable ones can use #2 but they were few and far in between.
- Union ironclads and most timber-clads or cotton-clads use #2.
- Side-wheel ships that have the ability to control their wheels independently use #1, they were very maneuverable if they opposed the direction of travel of their paddle wheels. Side wheelers that had thier paddle wheels on a single shaft use #2.
- Steam lauches may turn "on a dime" and need no gauge.
- You can always use a larger turning gauge than called for.
- Side-wheel ships that have the ability to control their wheels independently may turn in place if they move no more than 1" forward or backward in a turn.
- If you use the 1/1200 sized gauges for larger scale ships (1/600 perhaps) no one can fault you. This works well if you don't have much room.
Sewing and Fabric stores seol a product called Mix n Match Templates for Quilters product #JT-411. This consists of differing sizes of circles made of clear plastic. This may prove useful in smaller scales.
Gun Training Arcs
| 90 degree arc.
This is used for shore batteries or for pivot guns that can fire out of either side of an unarmored vessel. |
| 45 degree arc.
This is used for pivot guns firing out of the front or rear of casemate ironclads or wooden gunboats. |
| 30 degree arc.
This is used for pivot guns firing out of the sides of casemate ironclads or wooden gunboats. |
Notes: Monitors can, of course, fire 360 degrees except for:
- The first one (U.S.S. Monitor) which did not fire straight ahead because of the pilot house forward of the turret.
- The succeeding once which could not fire straight aft because of the smoke stack and ventilation stack aft of the turret.
- The dual turreted monitors which have a 30 degree arc aft that cannot be fired into by the front turret, and which have a 30 degree arc forward that cannot be fired into by the after turret.
