The Upper Garden at Mount Vernon

The Upper Garden is considered the "pleasure garden". It was planted with an array of colonial era annuals and perennials and featured a handsome greenhouse. The original greenhouse burned down and was rebuilt in the 1950's. Some of the things in bloom during our early September visit were: Hyacinth Bean, zinnias, red lobelia, joseph's coat, and black-eyed susans. There is also a boxwood and gravel parterre, and several fruit trees. The Upper Garden is surrounded by brick walls which, with the buildings at the corners, the paths, and the boxwood hedges add structure to the garden. While we were walking around in the late afternoon, we saw goldfinches eating flower seeds, a hummingbird, visiting the red lobelia, a profusion of butterflies, and a rabbit, nibbling on grass.
