Searching For Her Baby

When my mother was a young girl, she had to share a room with her many brothers and sisters. It was one of those old gigantic bedrooms and everyone slept on mattresses lay out on the floor.

One fateful night, everyone except my grandmother was already in bed. My grandmother was just outside washing dishes. My mother was trying to go to sleep when a noise in the room startled her. As she looked up to where the noise had come from, she saw a lady dresses in a long white gown hanging in mid air. The lady had no feet and her neck was cocked to one side as if she had been hung except there was no rope! Her face was very pale and her eyes were wide opened.

My mother turned to wake up my brother only to realise that he too was awake by the noise. My uncle, however, was too struck with fear to move or scream. My mother cried, "Nanay, Nanay! (Mother, mother!)"

By the time she got to the room the lady had disappeared. My grandmother said the lady was a ghost that haunts certain towns. She hung herself after she lost her child many, many years ago. Later, she came back as a ghost in search of her stolen child and would often appear in houses with young children.

Nak Balik Ke?

This story happened to cousin of my friend, who later, related this story to me. Kara was staying at a hostel in one of the universities in Malaysia when this incident happened.

It was one hot night when Kara was woken up by her friend. Her friend wanted to go to the lavatory and wanted Kara to accompany her. So, she got up and followed her friend to the ladies.

As her friend was inside the toilet, Kara waited for her outside. Somehow, Kara started to have an eerie and peculiar feeling about everything and anything. Kara soon get the feeling that the girl inside was not her friend after all. She called out to her and told her that she's not feeling well and heading back to the room.

Suddenly, in a deep, hollow voice, her 'friend' in the toilet said, "Nak balik ke...? Dah tau ke...? (You want to go back now...? So, you know already...?)"

The 'friend' repeated this again and again but Kara fled back to her room before any harm could come to her.

The Nun Student

This story happened in one the convents in Singapore. The school was built in 1854 and went through a series of major events such as the World War II, which shook the lives of those staying in the colonial-style building. The passage of years has seen quite a number of renowned figures in Malayan and Singaporean history passed through this institute. Among them, the late David Marshall and war heroine, Elizabeth Choy.

One memorable story has it that a young teacher was giving a lesson and noticed a nun, dressed in black, sitting at the back of the class listening intently to her lesson.

Being relatively new at teaching, she paid little heed to the stranger at the back but instead continued with her lesson. She was no doubt uncomfortable this all the while but when the class ended, however, she noticed that the nun was gone and heaved a sigh of relief.

She continued marking her students' books when she noticed the ends of her hair standing up. She happened to look up at the ceiling at one point and was shocked at what she saw.

The nun was sitting on one of the blades of a slowly rotating ceiling fan and looking down at the young teacher.

It Can't Be Him

Ali found himself woke up to a beatiful Saturday morning. As the exam was getting nearer, he decided he would spend the morning studying in the library. He got up and found his roomate Ahmad still sound asleep. The hostel was rather quiet, like most weekends.

Ali took a slow stroll down to the canteen for his breakfast before making his way to the library. He went to his favourite spot in the library and was determined to do what he was there for without much disturbances.

Just before Ali sat down, he noticed Ahmad was actually inside the library. He was only a few rolls of seats behind. As he could see Ahmad was rather busy with his own revision, Ali sat down without walking over to Ahmad. He just didn't want to disrupt Ahmad.

A few hours passed and Ali was too busy with his own work that he didn't really take note of the people around him. Then, at one point, his pen fell off the desk onto the ground. As he was bending down to pick up his pen, Ali noticed something strange behind him. He took another careful look and saw Ahmad, whom he knew all the while was sitting behind him. Nevertheless, the strange thing is that he had no legs.

"It could not be Ahmad! He was still sound asleep when I left the room," thought Ali.

He slowly turned around to take another look at Ahmad. However, Ahmad is no longer there. He felt a sudden surge of coldness inside the quiet library and he began to feel afraid. He packed up his stuff in a hassle and left the library. When he reached the hostel, he saw Ahmad, still in his pyjamas, brushing his teeth inside the washroom. Ahmad denied having been to the library at all that morning.

Do Not Comment

Wen Jian loves jungle trekking. He goes jungle trekking every weekend and he usually goes with some friends.

One Sunday afternoon, he went on his usual jungle trekking trip with three other friends. As they were on their way back, they smelled something very fragrant. To these regular hikers, such smell isn't anything unusual but no one ever says a word about it.

Wen Jian was the sceptical kind of guy, especially when it comes to ghosts and the supernatural. He made silly comments about the odour and said how smelly it was. His friends tried to stop him but the more they tried, the more he would say.

Later, he sensed trouble when he realised the same smell is also found in his car as he was driving back. Then, the smell followed him all evening, wherever he went. Even as he was going to bed, the smell was still following him. He was rather scared then and he just couldn't sleep.

As it got deeper into the night, Wen Jian, still trying to get over the smell and go to sleep, heard something beside him. He turned around and saw an old lady sleeping next to him. She was very old and had long hair. Wen Jian knew the smell came from her. He turned back, shut his eyes and starting begging her to let him go. She never appeared again, but the smell followed Wen Jian wherever he went for two whole weeks.
