Haven't You Visit Me?
"Uncle Sal was his name," my friend, Jess, told me one morning at school. "Last night as I was doing my homework, I heard a noise and I looked up and standing in the corner of my room was my Uncle Sal."
"Didn't you tell me that one of your uncles died a month ago? What was his name 'cause I thought you said your Uncle Sal died?" I interrupted her.
"Yes, my Uncle Sal did die, but there he was, standing in the corner of my room last night! I was too frightened to say a word at first but when I finally found my voice I screamed for my mother. Uncle Sal just disappeared after that."
I thought Jess had made up the whole thing but later that week, she came to me excitedly and said, "Guess what happened! Uncle Sal came back!"
"What?" I had almost forgotten the whole thing.
"You know how I told you about my Uncle Sal visited me last week?"
"Oh, yes," I remembered, "So, what happened? Did he come back to see you again?"
"No, not exactly. My mother was in the laundry room and she was talking to herself. She was sort of saying that she has not gone to visit Uncle Sal's grave yet and she think she should go soon," Jessica narrated the story. "Then, out of no where, she heard a voice talking back to her, 'Yes, why haven't you visited my grave yet? I went to Jessica's room a few days ago but she was scared seeing me.'"
"Geez, you mom must have freaked out," I said.
"My mother was so scared she ran to my room and pulled me into the car. She drove to the cemetery immediately and as we were paying our respects to Uncle Sal, I could feel him standing really close by. Then, a voice in the wind whispered thank you. We could easily recognise that it was Uncle Sal's voice."
Crossing The Road
A friend told me that this happened to her brother and his wife.
One night, while driving their car along a dark, isolated road deep inside a palm oil estate, they suddenly saw a woman standing in the middle of the road. He slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting her.
Bathed in the headlights of their car, most of her face was hidden by her hair that grew all the way down past her feet touching the ground. As they were stopping in front of her, she turned a bit to look at them. Her eyes were raging with hatred and she stared at them at the corner of her eyes for a few seconds before she turned back to face her feet.
Slowly, she pulled the burden of her hair with both hands as she took small steps. It seemed as if there was something very heavy tied to the end of her hair that made it so difficult for her to move.
The woman seemed oblivious to the presence of the car and its occupants as she took her time to cross the road slowly. The couple recited Koran verses as they waited for the woman and her long hair to finish their crossing. After it was all over, the couple sped away to their destination.
Spiritual Games
I have not seen or encountered any ghosts or supernatural beings myself. Nonetheless, I am often a witness to other people's experience with the paranormal. I could still remember that time when my schoolmates got themselves in trouble when they bravely taunted the supernatural beings.
I was still studying in grade school then. It was an all-girl school in Paranaque, Philippines. Many of the students would play the spirit of the glass (similar to spirit of the coin or an ouija board). Often, they chose to start at 6pm for they believed that is the hour when supernatural beings start to 'come out'.
That evening, four girls sneaked into a classroom on the fourth floor to play the spirit of the glass. All of a sudden one of the girls screamed, "Kapre!"
The rest of the girls stared at each other and began to feel frightened. Without a word, they stood up and ran away. As they were rushing down the stairs, they heard someone calling for help upstairs. They realised the girl who screamed kapre earlier was not with them. Fearing the worst, they ran back to her aid.
When they got to her, she was still sitting inside the classroom, struggling to get up. They went inside and started pulling her to them. They realised they were fighting with an unseen being who was pulling the girl on the other side. One of them said a prayer and after a while, they managed to pull their friend away.
All four of them were running down the stairs when I saw them. They were gasping for air in a state of shock. I took them to our guidance counsellor and they told us the story. The girl who screamed sustained a deep scratch mark on her leg. Later, she told us that she didn't actually see any kapre but she didn't know why she shouted. Then, when everyone ran away, she felt a strong hand grabbing her leg preventing her from getting up.
Going Home?
In South California, a Vietnamese man went to a temple one day. On his way back to the car park, Loong saw a girl. She was all drenched in her long white robe. She asked him if he could give her a ride to her house. He was a nice man, so he drove her home.
When they got into the car, he asked her where does she live. She gave him an address and Loong's surprise, it happened to be the house of someone he knows. When asked, she told him her name was Minh and she was the daughter of Loong's friend. Loong was puzzled as he never knew his friend had a daughter.
Anyway, he dropped her off, send his regards to her family and said he might drop by some day.
Weeks later, Loong came to visit the family. After he was seated, he asked where is Minh. Everyone in the family got a shock and stared at Loong with a blank look. He was taken aback but asked, "What happened? Some thing happened to Minh?"
His friend stared at Loong for a while before he could ask, "How did you know Minh?"
Loong told him he met Minh at the temple and he even gave her a ride home. Everyone in the family were looking at each other with such an astonished look. Then Loong's friend said, "Yes, indeed we have a daughter called Minh. Back then, we came to America illegally and the boat ride was risky and dangerous. Some of them made it, but many others didn't. Minh happened to be one of the unfortunate ones. She has been dead for almost 20 years!"
The wife brought a picture of Minh and Loong knew he had met Minh, not herself but her spirit.
Headless Passenger
Taxi drivers often have interesting ghost stories to tell. One of my relatives who owns a taxi company related his story to us. It has happened to one of his taxi drivers.
It was the wee hours of the night but Ambo was still on the road. He had wanted to earn the extra money he desperately needed. He had been driving around for almost an hour without any luck of a customer.
The sky was clear after a heavy rain. The air is cooling and everything seems so peaceful. Ambo was whistling to the tune on his radio as he drove around. Soon, he found himself driving along Balete Drive. The street is full of balete trees and is known to most locals as a haunted street.
Ambo couldn't care less as all he wanted now was just a paying passenger. Right ahead of him, a lady was seen waiting for a taxi. As Ambo approached, she waved for a ride.
She got in the car and Ambo asked where she wanted to go. However, she said she had no particular destination and asked Ambo to drive around until she could decide where she wanted to go.
After circling around the area for several minutes, they came to a junction. Ambo met his friend Oliver, a tricycle driver at the junction. Oliver tapped on his window and he looked petrified. At first, Ambo thought he needed help. He winded down his window and said, "Are you ok, Oliver?"
"Wellll, I am ok. Bbbbuut your passenger haass goooo-t nooo head, Ambo!"
"What?!" Ambo turned around as Oliver fled in his tricycle.
However, the girl is no longer behind.
