Background info provided by MAHQ
After the war, four additional G-4 units were constructed as testbed units for new mobile suit technologies, such as new sensors and fusion reactor configurations, armor materials and other innovations slated for mass production. All five suits served in this capacity until January 0083, when all five were transferred to frontline duty live out their operational lives on the assault carrier Tarawa. In the aftermath of Operation Stardust, the Tarawa and its Gundam compliment was assigned as a field liaison to the Titans Elite forces, and all five saw their last combat action at the five-day Titans fleet action "Opertaion Hammerhead" in Side 6.

BEAM RIFLE (1): This high-efficiency beam weapon, designed for use with the original Gundam "Alex" is in fact the basis for nearly all subsequent Federation beam weapons equipped on mobile suits. The beam rifle is not quite as powerful as other beam weapons, but makes better use of the energy available in its capacitors to avoid "overkill" discharges observed with previous versions. (In principle, a skilled pilot should be able to cripple or destroy a mobile suit by targeting a vital area instead of simply blowing it to bits with a more powerful weapon).
TRI-BARRELED 90mm GATLING GUNS (1 or 2): All Alpha Gundam and Alex variants are each equipped with two of these gatlings guns on the forearms. These machineguns have a relatively short range, but their high rate of fire and ease of aiming gives the Alpha Gundam a considerable edge over most other mobile suits at close range.
55mm HEAD VULCAN (2): For close combat, the Gundam is equipped with a pair of 55mm head vulcans mounted just above the sensor plate. These machineguns aren't all that powerful on their own, but their rapid firing rate supplements superb accuracy and form the head vulcans into valuable defensive tools. They can be used to shoot down missiles, small fighters, or even damage specific parts of enemy mobile suits with better accuracy than any other handheld weapons.
BEAM SABER (2): Regardless of armor or weapons loadouts, most mobile suits are both most vulnerable and most deadly in close quarters. Therefore, the Alpha Gundam is equipped with two plasma/energy beam sabers designed specifically for close combat against enemy mobile suits or warships. The beam saber can penetrate any armor material known to man, but can usually be partially deflected by other melee weapons, including Zeon heat blades and some shields.
