BACKGROUND

The RX-78NT-1 Gundam "Alex" was a big step above its already-well-performing (but hopelessly overworked) RX-78-2 predecessor. In addition to the standard head vulcan guns, beam sabers and a beam rifle, the Alex mounted a 90 mm Gatling gun in each forearm, giving the mobile suit heavy close-range firepower to back up its beam rifle. The Alex also replaced the costly and complicated Core Block System of the original Gundam with an experimental 360-degree "panoramic monitor" screen and new cockpit configuration, with all of the Alex's controls incorporated into easily accessible panels on the pilot's "linear seat." This configuration gave the pilot an almost unlimited field of vision, thus allowing for easier target acquisition and faster response time. Another feature adding to the Alex's maneuverability was the "magnetic coating" applied to the suit's joints and motors, reducing friction and wear to almost nothing and making the Alex extremely responsive to pilot input.

After the war, four additional G-4 units were constructed as testbed units for new mobile suit technologies, such as new sensors and fusion reactor configurations, armor materials and other innovations slated for mass production. All five suits served in this capacity until January 0083, when all five were transferred to frontline duty live out their operational lives on the assault carrier Tarawa. In the aftermath of Operation Stardust, the Tarawa and its Gundam compliment was assigned as a field liaison to the Titans Elite forces, and all five saw their last combat action at the five-day Titans fleet action "Opertaion Hammerhead" in Side 6.

NOTES:
  1. Destroying the head of the mobile suit will knock out the mobile suit's major sensor systems, including all of the optics systems (infrared, nightvision, thermal). Radar and communications will be unaffected.
  2. Destroying one thruster of the main vernier pack will reduce the flight speed of the mobile suit in space by 50%. Destroying both thrusters or the pack itself will render the MS immobile.
  3. Depleting the MDC of the cockpit will kill the pilot instantly and render the mobile suit useless.
  4. Depleting the MDC of the Main Body will destroy the mobile suit, probably killing the pilot as well.

WEAPON SYSTEMS:

  1. BEAM RIFLE (1): This high-efficiency beam weapon, designed for use with the original Gundam "Alex" is in fact the basis for nearly all subsequent Federation beam weapons equipped on mobile suits. The beam rifle is not quite as powerful as other beam weapons, but makes better use of the energy available in its capacitors to avoid "overkill" discharges observed with previous versions. (In principle, a skilled pilot should be able to cripple or destroy a mobile suit by targeting a vital area instead of simply blowing it to bits with a more powerful weapon).

  2. TRI-BARRELED 90mm GATLING GUNS (1 or 2): All Alpha Gundam and Alex variants are each equipped with two of these gatlings guns on the forearms. These machineguns have a relatively short range, but their high rate of fire and ease of aiming gives the Alpha Gundam a considerable edge over most other mobile suits at close range.

  3. 55mm HEAD VULCAN (2): For close combat, the Gundam is equipped with a pair of 55mm head vulcans mounted just above the sensor plate. These machineguns aren't all that powerful on their own, but their rapid firing rate supplements superb accuracy and form the head vulcans into valuable defensive tools. They can be used to shoot down missiles, small fighters, or even damage specific parts of enemy mobile suits with better accuracy than any other handheld weapons.

  4. BEAM SABER (2): Regardless of armor or weapons loadouts, most mobile suits are both most vulnerable and most deadly in close quarters. Therefore, the Alpha Gundam is equipped with two plasma/energy beam sabers designed specifically for close combat against enemy mobile suits or warships. The beam saber can penetrate any armor material known to man, but can usually be partially deflected by other melee weapons, including Zeon heat blades and some shields.

  5. CLOSE COMBAT: If necessary, the RX-78-4 can engage in melee combat rather than use a weapon. The mobile suit is extremely agile and can execute most typical hand to hand combat moves, such as punches, jump kicks, leap attacks, rolling with impacts, etc.

    1. DAMAGE (BEAM SABER):

    2. One handed Slash: 4D6x10 M.D.

    3. Two handed Slash: 4D8x10 M.D.

    4. Boosted Slash: 5D8x10 M.D.

    5. Stab/thrust: 2D8x10 M.D. (plus penetration to all in line systems)

    6. Diving Slash: 5D6x10 MD

    7. DAMAGE (HAND TO HAND):

    8. Restrained Punch: 4D6 M.D.

    9. Full Strength Punch: 2D6x10 M.D.

    10. "Booster" Punch: 2D8x10 M.D. (counts as two attacks)

    1. Tear or Pry with Hands: 5D6 M.D.

    2. Kick: 6D6 M.D.

    3. Leap Kick: 6D8 M.D.

    4. Body Flip/Throw: 3D8 M.D.

    5. Body Block/Tackle: 5D8 M.D.

    6. Stomp: 4D6 M.D. (only effective against small objects)
