You'll Never Walk Alone

When you walk through a storm,

Hold your head up high,

And don't be afraid of the dark.

At the end of a storm,

There's a golden sky,

And the sweet silver song of a lark.

Walk on through the wind,

Walk on through the rain,

Though your dreams be tossed and blown,

Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,

And you'll never walk alone...

Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,

And you'll never walk alone...

You'll never walk alone.

Background

The song is from the Rogers and Hammerstein musical "Carousel". However it is more well known as a hit for Gerry Marsden (Gerry and the Pacemakers), who had raised to fame with "Ferry cross the Mersey" The reason why the Kop adopted it is not really known. However one story was that at the time that Gerry Marsden released the song, it was played at Anfield a few times before matches. Then one Saturday it wasn't played but the Kop started singing it anyway and it just grew from that, to the now traditional rendition before kick-off. Gerry Marsden sang the song on the last match of the Kop.
