Sailor Moon Primer:

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon) is a popular anime and manga series that includes five seasons on television, three movies, eighteen volumes of manga, and even was made into a musical. While this shrine is dedicated to characters only found in a small section of the Sailor Moon universe, a primer is needed for you to better understand what these characters are a part of. This primer is meant to give you a basic knowledge of the Sailor Moon manga since this site deals only with the manga storyline. If you are already familiar with the Sailor Moon manga, you can skip this section.

"Naoko Takeuchi is the author who originally created the Sailor Moon manga. She clothed her cast of magical superheroines with variaions of the traditional sailor fuku that girls in Japan wear as school uniforms. Sailor Moon's story is a typical example of the shoujo genre of anime and manga: a story created by girls, for girls. Shoujo stories tend to feature strong heroines; plenty of romance; themes about maturity, sexuality, and what it's like to grow up; screw-ball comedy; and more focus on character development and intricate plot than on action. Sure, Sailor Moon has fight scenes galore, but the action isn't as important as what happens to develop Usagi's character in every episode.  Sailor Moon is a story of female senshi (soldiers) meant to protect their worlds from outside evils. While there are thousands of senshi on thousands of planets, this story puts the focus on the senshi in our own galaxy, the Milky Way. These senshi include (in the order they appear):

Sailor Moon: Tsukino Usagi
Sailor Mercury: Mizuno Ami
Sailor Mars: Hino Rei
Sailor Jupiter: Kino Makoto
Sailor Venus: Aino Minako
Sailor Chibi Moon: Chibi Usa (from the future)
Sailor Pluto: Meioh Setsuna
Sailor Uranus: Tenoh Haruka
Sailor Neptune: Kaioh Michiru
Sailor Saturn: Tomoe Hotaru

The senshi draw their strength from the planet they are associated with and channel that energy into their own special powers and attacks. To be able to use these special powers, the senshi must first transform into their senshi form by using the phrase "____ Power, Make Up!" The blank would be filled in with whatever planet that senshi represents. (eg: "Moon power, make up!" for Sailor Moon)

Our story starts with young Tsukino Usagi who is your typical, yet slightly goofy, Japanese student. However, her life is soon changed by a cat named Luna that says she is actually a superheroine named Sailor Moon that will defend Earth. She and Luna then go forth to find four other senshi on their quest to find the princess of the moon kingdom, who is later revealed to be Usagi. She also meets her destined lover, Chiba Mamoru. Sailor Moon and the other senshi go forth to battle evil, but at the same time have to deal with school and the usual teenage troubles.

Later a little girl (Chibi Usa) falls from the sky looking for Sailor Moon so she can help save the 30th Century from evil. This girl is later revealed to be Usagi and Mamoru's future daughter, and even later becomes Sailor Chibi Moon. They also meet the senshi of time, Sailor Pluto. Sailor Moon and the senshi do battle to save their own futures.

In the next story arc, the final three Milky Way senshi are revealed in a twist of unsettling proportions. The last senshi is thought to be a messiah of death and Uranus and Neptune want to kill her human form before she awakens as Sailor Saturn. However, things turn out for the best and Saturn risks her life to save the world from destruction.

In a final test of strength, Sailor Moon must face the death of her friends as well as the destuction of every senshi across the universe by Sailor Galaxia, a senshi bent on being the most powerful senshi in the universe.
