Generation No. 5

SETH5 MARTIN (SETH4, EPHRAIM3, JOHN2 MARTYN/MARTIN, EDWARD1 MARTYN) was born August 21, 1745 in Rehoboth, MA1, and died July 12, 1817 in Grafton, NH2,3. He married (1) MARY HORTON July 4, 1765 in Rehoboth, MA4. He married (2) ELIZABETH (BETSY) HOYT January 4, 1807 in Grafton, NH5, daughter of JONATHAN HOYT and ELIZABETH CURRIER.

Notes for SETH MARTIN:

Occupation: Hogreave (keeper of hogs)
Seth joined the Revolutionary War from NH. He was in the NH Militia
In 1772, Seth Martin was among the first 12 settlers to arrive in Grafton
January 16, 1807, Seth was made a guardian of James and Julia Hoyt. This will account for the extra children in the future census records.
Seth is buried in Razor Hill Cemetery, Grafton, NH with his 1st wife.
Seth died July 12, 1817 in Grafton, NH

Seth married Mary Horton in Rehoboth in 1765. Sometime after that he moved to Grafton, NH where he died in 1817. I have only found two children of Seth and Mary Horton. Supposedly Sylvester their son was born in MA and don't know where Mary was born. Can not find birth record to substantiate these two births. After Mary died in 1805, Seth remarried in 1807 to an Elizabeth (Betsy) Hoyt. They had 5 children. I have found birth records for Seth 1807, Earial born and died in 1809 and Jonathan born in 1811. However, Sylvanus and Albert appear in guardianship papers naming Seth as their father and Betsy later sold land to Sylvanus naming him as her son. So these two were definitely Seth and Betsy's sons.

Seth joined the Revolutionary War from NH. He was in the NH Militia. He appears as a Lieutenant on the payroll of Col. Jonathan Chase's Regiment, which reinforced the Northern Continental Army at Ticonderoga by General Falson's order May 7, 1777. He was discharged June 16, 1777, Time in service was 1 month and 10 days.

(NH State Papers, Vol. XV, page 14)

Seth Martin appears on the payroll as Lieutenant in Col. Jonathan Chases's Regiment, which marched from Cornish in Sept. 1777 and joined the Continental Army under General Gates near Saratoga. He entered service on October 2, 1777 and discharged October 24, 1777. (NH State Papers, Vol. XV page 373).

Papers from the Revolutionary War National Archives and from the DAR have been obtained to substantiate the proof.

In 1772, the first 12 settlers arrived in Grafton, Seth Martin was among them along with Captain Joseph Hoyt and Hezekiah Bullock. On April 18, 1774, they met at the home of Seth Martin to vote on a warrant to formally allocate the twelve lots required to be settled in the charter. Seth Martin received the NO. 12-13 lots in the 6 range which was to become Razor Hill.

Seth appears on the tax rolls for 1797, 1798, 1799, 1800, 1806, 1807, 1808, 1809, 1810, 1812, 1813, 1814, 1815, 1816, 1817 for Grafton, NH. In 1818 and 1819, his widow Betsy, appears. Even though there is another Seth listed as Seth Jr. or Seth 2nd on the tax rolls, this is not our Lt. Seth's son. It is Levi's son Seth.
