1.  John Toombs¹ was born about 1780 in Virginia.²  He appeared on the census 1850 Rutherford County TN Census in Rutherford Co., TN.  The 1850 Rutherford County, Tennessee census stated he was 70 years old with two children still at home.  He died in Tennessee.

 

He was married to Nancy in 1810.  Nancy¹ was born about 1789 in Virginia.  She died in Tennessee.²  The 1850 Census for Rutherford County, Tennessee states that Nancy was 61 years old with two children still living at home.  John Toombs and Nancy had the following children:

2.  Hardin Toombs was born about 1813 in Rutherford Co Tenn.  He appeared on the census 1850 Rutherford County TN Census in Rutherford Co Tenn.^2,2  The 1850 Rutherford County, Tennessee census states that Hardin was 37 years old with 7 children.

 

He was married to Elizabeth Coleman on May 5, 1833 in Rutherford Co Tennessee.  Elizabeth Coleman was born about 1815 in Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1850 in Rutherford Co Tenn.  The 1850 Rutherford County, Tennessee Census states that Elizabeth was 35 years old with 7 children.  Hardin Toombs and Elizabeth Coleman had the following children:

 

            11                      i.    Malinda E. Toombs was born about 1834 in Rutherford Co Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1850 in Rutherford Co Tennessee.  The 1850 Rutherford County, Tennessee Census states Malinda was 16 years old.

            12                     ii.    John W. Toombs was born about 1836 in Rutherford Co Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Rutherford Co Tennessee.  The 1850 Rutherford County, Tennessee Census states that John W. was 14 years old.

            13                    iii.    Susan Toombs was born about 1838 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1850 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.  According to the 1850 Rutherford County, Tennessee Census Susan was 12 years old.

 

            14                    iv.    John G. Toombs was born about 1839 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.  He (or she) appeared on the census in 1850 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.  According to the 1850 Rutherford County, Tennessee Census, John was 11 years old.

 

            15                     v.    Hibernia Toombs was born about 1843 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1850 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.  According to the 1850 Rutherford County, Tennessee Census, Hibernia was 7 years old.

 

            16                    vi.    Malvina Toombs was born about 1844 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1850 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.  According to the 1850 Rutherford County, Tennessee Census, Malvina was 6 years old.

 

            17                   vii.    Hardin W. Toombs was born about 1848 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.  According to the 1850 Rutherford County, Tennessee Census, Hardin W. was 2 years old.

 

 

3.  William Toombs¹ was born in 1815 in Tennessee.  He died about 1875 in White County, Illinois.

 

He was married to Elizabeth Foster on December 14, 1836 in possibly Rutherford TN.  Elizabeth Foster¹ was born in 1817.  William Toombs and Elizabeth Foster had the following children:

He was married to Lavenia Nixon on July 5, 1844 in Wayne County, Illinois.  Lavenia Nixon¹ was born in 1822 in Tennessee.  She died about 1854 in Rutherford Co Tenn.   There is very little information on William Toombs 2nd wife, "L". See the 1850 census of Wayne County, IL. It only lists her first name by the initial "L", gives her age as 28, born in TN. "L" probably died sometime between Sept 2, 1850(census date) and 1855 because, William married Rebecca Gray Dec 15, 1855.  William Toombs and Lavenia Nixon had the following children:

4.  Anderson Toombs was born about 1820 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.  According to the 1850 Rutherford County, Tennessee Census Anderson was 30 years old with 5 children.

He was Note.  Anderson may not belong to this family but he and his family were in Rutherford County, Tennessee in the 1850 Census along with other families of this line. If he is not a brother, then he is probably a cousin. I will include this record at this time till my research confirms this.

 

He was married to Joice in Tennessee.  Joice appeared on the census in 1850 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.  According to the 1850 Rutherford County, Tennessee Census, Joice was 32 years old with 5 children.

She was born in Tennessee.  Anderson Toombs and Joice had the following children:

He was married to Mary I. about 1847 in Tennessee.  Mary I. was born about 1830 in Tennessee.  She appeared on the census in 1850 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.  According to the 1850 Rutherford County, Tennessee Census, Mary was 20 years old with 2 children.

THIRD GENERATION

 

18.  John s. Toombs¹ was born on December 25, 1838 in Tennessee.  He died on June 23, 1913 in Mill Shoals White County/W. Antioch Cemetery.  He was buried on June 24, 1913 in West Antitoch Church east of Mill Shoals IL.   Ref: On John S. Toombs death certificate, his father is said to be Samuel Toombs, born in Penn. John S. Toombs did name a son Samuel. The informant on this death certificate is John's son, John H. Toombs, Jr. He should certainly know, but I have doubts about Samuel being the father. I have always thought William Toombs born in 1815, was his father because of John S. being on the censuses living in the household of William and Elizabeth (Foster) Toombs. Also, this is the first reference I have found about White County Toombs being from Penn. All others mention Tenn. and Virginia. Therefore, I have entered into my records that William and Elizabeth Toombs were the parents. Research might change this later.

 

He was married to Elizabeth (Marcile) Tate on February 26, 1863 in White County, Illinois.  Elizabeth (Marcile) Tate¹ died on October 4, 1918 in Mill Shoals White County/W. Antioch Cemetery.  She was born in Saline, Illinois.  She Maiden Name in Marcile.   Marcile was her maiden name. Her first marriage was to a James Tate around 1848.

            60                   vii.    James H. Toombs¹ was born in 1879.   James H. Toombs lived in Paxton, IL (Ford Co) in Nov 1923, because he was the informant on William Toombs, Jr. and Wife Delila's death certificates.

            61                  viii.    Eliza Lavada Toombs¹ was born on February 16, 1882 in Mill Shoals, IL, White County.

 

19.  Mary Catherine Toombs¹ was born in 1840 in Tennessee.

 

She was married to James R. Taylor on April 20, 1867 in White County, Illinois.

 

20.  William Toombs¹ was born on October 15, 1839 in TN.  He died on November 7, 1923 in Wayne County, Illinois.  He was buried in Thackrey Gray Cemetery.   It is important to note, on the 1880 Census of Wayne County, Illinois, William & Deliah had in their household a male name of Alexander, 23 years old, and relationship shown as brother to William. This means that this William is surely the son of William Toombs born 1815, because they are both on the 1860 census of White County, Illinois in the household of William Toombs b-1815 and Rebecca Gray b-1825. Also, I have a record of a daughter born in 1883 that states that she was the fourth child of William and Deliah, but this record does not give the first name of the child. (Ref copies of above mentioned censuses in catalog file and birth record in Toombs file, also death certificate of William Toombs]. William Toombs was living on 40 acres in Wayne County, Four Mile Township, Section 12, in 1880(Ref: 1881 Map of Four mile Township, Wayne County, IL) Williams cause of death on certificate: PNEUMONIA, 2nd cause: Cystitis (inflammation of the bladder).

 

Delila Trotter¹ (daughter of King Trotter and Francias Maulding) was born on February 7, 1845.  She died on May 24, 1925 in Wayne County, Illinois.  She was buried in Thackrey Gray Cemetery.   J.H. Toombs of Paxton, IL was the informant on the death certificate of both William and Delia. This is James H. Toombs who is son of John S. and Elizabeth (Tate) Toombs. William and Delila were his Uncle and Aunt.  William Toombs and Delila Trotter had the following children:

 

            62                      i.    Alanson Toombs¹ was born in 1875.   No further information on Alanson. Theory is he may have died young.

 

23.  Nancy Jane Toombs¹ was born on June 25, 1851 in Mill Shoals, IL; White County.  She died on June 1, 1913 in Burnt Prairie, Illinois.  She was buried on June 4, 1913 in West Antitoch Church east of Mill Shoals IL.   Nancy Jane Toombs Rebecca Gray would be Nancy's stepmother because Rebecca and William Toombs did not get married until Dec 11, 1855. According to the 1870 White County, Illinois Census, Nance Jane was living in the household of Jeremiah Reeves as a domestic servant.

 

She was married to John Miller Tate on December 20, 1872 in White County, Illinois.  Nancy Jane Toombs and John Miller Tate had the following children:

 

            63                      i.    Annie Elizabeth Tate was born on November 7, 1873 in White County, Illinois.

 

24.  Nancy Ann Toombs¹ was born in 1852 in White County, Illinois.   1880 census, White County Mill Shoals Township for family members. Nancy may be buried in Thomas Prairie Cemetery since that is where her husband is buried. Also, there is some question here as to Nancy Ann's identity. On the 1860 Census for Wayne County, IL, Nancy is listed in the household of William and Rebecca Toombs, but her last name is shown as GRAY! It is my opinion that Nancy Ann came into William Toombs family with his marriage to Rebecca Gray in 1855 because on a IL state census taken in September 1855 Nancy Ann b 1851, is not listed in the female groups. It may be Nancy Ann was a niece of Rebecca's or a child from a previous marriage?

 

She was married to William J. Taylor on December 23, 1866 in White County, Illinois.

 

26.  Isaac Johnson Toombs¹ was born in November 1865 in Mill Shoals, Illinois; White County.  He died in 1955 in White County, Illinois/Thackrey/Gray Cem.  He was buried in 1955 in Thackrey/Gray Cemetery.  He Nickname in Uncle Jonce or John.

 

He was married to Martha Jane Taylor (daughter of James Harrison Taylor and Eliza Jane Trotter) on December 11, 1889 in James Taylor Residence White County.  Martha Jane Taylor¹ was born in August 1866 in White County, Illinois.  She died in 1935 in White County, Illinois/Gray/Gray Cem.  She was buried in Thackrey/Gray Cemetery.  Isaac Johnson Toombs and Martha Jane Taylor had the following children:

 

          +64                      i.    Lawrence Walter Toombs (born on March 23, 1892).

            65                     ii.    Newton Orville Toombs¹ was born in 1893.  He died in died in teens.

27.  Newton J. Toombs¹ was born on September 2, 1862 in Mill Shoals, Illinois; White County.  He died on September 18, 1922 in Mt. Carmel, Illinois Wabash, IL.  He was buried in Rose Cemetery, Wabash, Illinois.

 

He was married to Almindra Epperson on August 15, 1886 in White County, Illinois.

 

28.  Thomas Jefferson Toombs¹ was born in 1856 in Mill Shoals, Illinois; White County.   Thomas J and Cora have 7 children. On Oscar's birth record its stated he is the seventh child.

 

He was married to Cora May Buchanan on March 15, 1895 in Carmi, White County Illinois.

 

29.  James Toombs¹ was born in 1859 in White County, Illinois.  He died in 1894 in about 1894.

 

He was married to Malinda Renfro on May 26, 1878 in White County, Illinois.  James Toombs and Malinda Renfro had the following children:

 

            69                      i.    Minnie May Toombs was born on September 25, 1879 in White County, Illinois.

 

30.  Susan Toombs¹ was born on July 14, 1860.  She died on April 18, 1939 in Bell Prairie, IL/Hamilton, IL.  She was buried in Springer Cemetery.   Susan Toombs was "farmed out" when she was very young, Her father, WilliamToombs, was listed on the 1870 White County, Illinois Census as an invalid. He probably was not able to take care of his large family.

 

She was married to Ross Milton Thackrey on December 22, 1892 in Burnt Prairie, Illinois, White County.

 

33.  James M. Toombs was born on August 17, 1841 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.  He appeared on the census in 1850 in Rutherford County, Tennessee.  According to the 1850 Rutherford County, Tennessee Census, James M. was 8 years old

He died on August 26, 1929 in Saint Louis, Missouri.

 

He was married to Nancy Ann Phillips on November 15, 1863 in Paris, Henry County, Tennessee.  James M. Toombs and Nancy Ann Phillips had the following children:

55.  William Henry Toombs¹ was born in 1867 in Mill Shoals, IL; White County.  He died in 1933 in after 1933.   William Henry was still living when his wife died in 1933

 

He was married to Lucinda Katherine Von in 1889 in Illinois.  Lucinda Katherine Von¹ died in 1933 in about 1933.

 

56.  Samuel R. Toombs¹ was born on March 28, 1869 in Mill Shoals, IL; White County.  He died on August 27, 1936 in Mt. Carmel, Wabash County Illinois.  He was buried in Highland Memorial Cemetery Wabash County, Illinois.   Samuel lived in Mount Vernon, IL in 1916 (or IN). 57.  Thomas S. Toombs¹ was born on May 6, 1872 in Mill Shoals, IL, White County.  He died on January 31, 1916 in Mt. Carmel, Wabash County Illinois.  He was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Wabash County, IL.   White County Obits in Carmi Democrat Tribune. Thomas was killed in the Big Four Shops accident in Mt. Carmel, IL

 

 

59.  John D. Toombs¹ was born on February 27, 1877 in Mill Shoals, IL; White County.  He died on March 9, 1920 in White County, Illinois.   1900 census White County Mill Shoals Township Springerton Village

 

He was married to Ada White in White County, Illinois.

 

64.  Lawrence Walter Toombs¹ was born on March 23, 1892 in White County, Illinois.  He died on December 14, 1970 in Mill Shoals White County/W. Antioch Cemetery.  He was buried in West Antitoch Church east of Mill Shoals IL.

 

He was married to Lurah Madge Simpson (daughter of Alonzo Thomas Simpson and Olive Mae Clark) in 1913 in Fairfield, IL Wayne County IL.  Lurah Madge Simpson¹ was born in 1892.  She died in 1972 in Wayne County Illinois /buried in W.  She was buried in West Antitoch Church east of Mill Shoals IL.  Lawrence Walter Toombs and Lurah Madge Simpson had the following children:
