A Tribute to the Earnhardts
This part of my page is dedicated to the late Ralph Earnhardt. Ralph Earnhardt was born on Febuary 29, 1928 in Kannapolis, North Carolina. Ralph Earnhardt Winston Cup career started in 1956-57 and 1961-64.Even though he was never a Winston Cup champion, Ralph Earnhardt, who drove the number 8 car, was one of the greatest drivers to drive in Winston Cup. Ralph was known as the Master of Short Tracks. He barely raced in Winston Cup but was named NASCAR's Sportsman Division Champion in '56 and '61. When he did race he was very good. He got 7 top 10s in 8 starts. That year he got 17th in the points. His last race was in 1964 at Daytona, were he started 28th and finished 19th. He never had many other accomplishments. Then on September 26, 1973 Ralph Earnhardt died. In 1989, Ralph was inducted into the National Motorsports Press Association's Hall of Fame. He is also in the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Talladega. Ralph Earnhardt is also named one of the 50 greatest drivers of all time. In Ralph Winston Cup career he had 51 starts, no wins, 1 pole, 6 top 5s, 16 top 10s, he won $22,050, and only led in 4 races.
This next part is a tribute to the man. 7 time Winston Cup Champion who drives the car number 3 for Richard Childress, Dale Earnhardt. Dale Earnhardt, also know as the Intimidator, was born on April 29, 1951 in Kannapolis, North Carolina. Dale Earnhardt grew up around racing with his father, Ralph Earnhardt, racing short tracks in North Carolina. Ralph was a repected and great driver. Before Earnhardt started racing in offically in 1979, Ralph died. But in '79 he shot off like a rocket getting the Rookie of the Year award, winning his first race at Bristol and getting his first pole at Riverside. Then the next year, 1980, Earnhardt won the Winston Cup championship. He was the only person to win Rookie of the Year and a championship back to back. Then things got kinda rough for Earnhardt. Not making the top 10 in points, winning only 5 races between then and 1985. Then in '86 Earnhardt came back winning 5 races and getting 4 poles in 1986. He also won the championship and the American Driver of the Year award. Earnhardt was the man again and would stay that way for awhile. In '87 he won 11 races, the Championship, Driver of the Year, and the NMPA, National Motorsports Press Award, Driver of the Year. Things went good over the years for Earnhardt. 3 wins in '88, 5 in '89 and a second place finish in the points in '89. Then in 1990, he did it again winning 9 races, 4 poles, the Championship, the Iroc Championship, a Gatorade 125, the IROC, International Race of Champions, championship, and the NMPA Driver of the Year Award. In 1991 he did it again, he won the Championship, 4 races. In 1993 he did it once again, he won the Championship, 6 races, and 2 poles. 1994 was once again another great season for Earnhardt winning the Championship, 4 races, 2 poles, the American Motorsports Driver of the Year, and the NMPA Driver of the Year. In 1995 he had another great season falling one place short of the championship, but he won the IROC championship, 5 races, and 3 poles. This would be the last great season for Earnhardt. After this he would fall in the points winning 2 races in '96. Then in '97 Earnhardt had a very bad season, he didn't win a race and had to watch Jeff Gordon win the title again if it wasn't as bad as watching him win it in 1995. Then in 1998 Earnhardt started the season with a bang. He won the Daytona 500. This would be the only race he would win in 1998 but a great accomplishment indeed. This was the year his son, Dale Jr., started racing in the Busch series. Earnhardt got to watch Little E take the championship. Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. would race together for the first time competivly in Japan. Earnhardt Sr. had a red Coca-Cola car while Jr. had a black Coca-Cola car. Mike Skinner, Earnhardt Sr.'s teammate, won it Jr. got second and Sr. finished somewhere in the top ten. What's in store for the Earnhardt's in '99. Well a second place finish in Daytona for Sr. but two bad races for Jr. Earnhardt has set alot of records in Winston Cup. Tieing Richard Petty for championships, and winning the most Winston Selects ('87, '90, '93). What is next for Earnhardt. Possibly a championship. Well he has a second place finish at Daytona but he wrecked in the JiffyLube/Big Kmart race.Now Earnhardt is taking his position on the top 10 in points after his BIG WIN at Talladega. For Earnhardt this is the year.
This next part will be about Dale Earnhardt Jr., aka Little E or the Dominator. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was born in Concord, North Carolina on October 10, 1974. Dale Jr. grew up around racing just like his father. His father never gave him really any attention because he was always racing. He has 2 brothers and a sister. Dale Jr. started racing at 17. He drove late model around North Carolina until starting racing in Busch in 1995. He raced 7 races in '95. He raced few races up until 1998 when he went for a full season. Dale Jr.'s first two races were very bad but after that he got top 10's and wins. After those two races he had basicly no compition exept for Matt Kennseth. Throughout the year Dale Jr. had 7 wins, 3 poles, and he won $835,565. He also won the Busch Grand National Championship. At the end of the season he raced in an exibition event in Japan vs. he dad, Dale Earnhardt. He placed 3rd next to Mike Skinner who won it and Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon. What is in store for Jr. in '99. Well 4 Winston Cup races is his plans.
