Meth Update

Methamphetamine is a synthetic stimulant compound produced and sold in powder form, capsules, pills and chunks. Common street names are speed, crank, ice, crystal and meth. Meth is smoked in either rock or powder form, snorted, or injected directly into a vein. When smoking meth, it reaches the brain in about six seconds, twice as fast as injecting. Meth produces the same high as cocaine, but the effects can last from 8 to 24 hours. It speeds up the heart rate, gives the user a "rush", before crashing them into a violence-prone depression as it wears off. It allows students to stay awake all night and graveyard-shift employees to stay busy on the job. Addicts have been known to stay awake for extremely long periods of time, often resulting in some very violent behavior. One of the most popular forms of meth is "crystal meth".Its main ingredient is ephedrine, a chemical found in many legal drugs, including bronchial dilators, diet pills like Mini Thins, and decongestants. Because ephedrine is a legal narcotic, addicts can purchase them over the counter and easily produce crystal meth. Meth was primarily a West Coast biker-gang drug, but not any longer. Meth use and meth labs have increased in the Midwest, indicating that it could soon be a nationwide problem. Part of the increase in meth use is due to new trafficking and distribution systems. Mexican traffickers are producing large quantities of pure meth in large scale laboratories for distribution. Meth is a highly profitable business for them because they do not have to depend on South America for cocaine. Addicts smoke granules of crystal meth in glass pipes, about three inches long with a one-inch diameter dome at one end. Unlike a crack cocaine pipe where the drug is placed on a nest above the dome, the crystal meth rock is placed directly into the dome. Smoke from the pipe is odorless, making it difficult to detect. After smoking crystal meth, the addicts experience a rush, with bursts of energy, and they feel more alert. After the high, they feel extremely fatigued and usually go into a prolonged state of deep sleep that can last up to three days. When they wake up from this deep sleep, they feel exhausted from having been on a meth binge, and they will start eating anything that’s around. The addict can also have psychological problems including depression, paranoia and hallucinations, and in some cases suicidal tendencies and violent outbursts. Dr. David Ohlms, who has worked in the addictions field for more than 25 years says, "Meth has a very long half life, it stays in the body longer so the user maintains the high, or the "buzz" much longer than with cocaine. And I think that’s one reason meth is gaining in popularity." Dr. Ohlms says, "Of all the drugs of abuse I have seen people use, I associate violent and aggressive behavior with meth. I see far more cases of domestic violence, child abuse, assaults, and bazaar attacks for no apparent reason at all. I think that the combination of severe fatigue, over stimulation of the brain, flavored with some paranoia and suspicion, you have the perfect setting for violent, acting out kinds of behavior."
