Throttle Play
Checking and Adjusting
Checking the Throttle Cable Free Play
….Set the engine idling speed and synchronize the carbs before finalizing the throttle cable free play. If there is a great deal of throttle play and you cannot sync the carbs, just be sure the idling speed is satisfactory and then adjust the throttle cable freeplay.
….Check the throttle free play at the flange of the throttle grip. It should be 3-5 mm or 0.12-0.20 inches. If it is out of specifications, adjust. Free play is the amount of movement at the throttle grip before it engages or actually moves the throttle cable one way of another.
....If adjustment is necessary, remove the seat and remove or lift up the fuel tank so your can get at the decelerator and accelerator cables underneath.
Adjusting the Throttle Cable Free Play at the Carburetor end.
….NOTE: What happens when you twist the
throttle grip to accelerate? The accelerator cable (1) is pulled.….At the
carburetor end of the throttle loosen the locknut (2) on the decelerator
cable.
….Turn the adjusting nut (3) in direction (a) or (b) to take up any slack on
the decelerator cable.
….Loosen the locknut (4) on the accelerator cable.
….Turn the adjusting nut (5) in direction (1) or (b) until the specified
throttle cable free play is obtained.
….Tighten the locknuts when finished.
….NOTE: Direction (a) will increase throttle cable free play, while
direction (b) will decrease free play.
Adjusting the Throttle Cable Free Play
at the Handlebar side
….Loosen the locknut (1).
….Turn the adjusting nut (2) in direction (a) or (b)
….NOTE: Direction (a) will increase throttle cable free play, while
direction (b) will decrease cable free play.
CAREFUL
….After adjusting throttle cable free play, start the engine and in neutral,
turn the handlebar to the left and right to make sure the engine idling speed
does not, has not changed.
....Tighten the locknut when the cable free play is correct.
….Reinstall the fuel tank and seat.
