"Afghans for Angels" is an organization made up completely of volunteers who make and deliver baby blankets to local hospitals to give to parents who have suffered the loss of their infant through miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant death.

The death of a child, whether by miscarriage or later on, is a totally devastating event in a parent's life. While this is sometimes a very difficult subject to speak of, it does happen nonetheless. Through consultations with such groups as "The Pregnancy and Infant Loss Center" and a local chapter of "The Compassionate Friends", we have learned that caring and supportive servies are of great importance during this time.

Our "Afghans for Angels" are placed lovingly around these infant angels when they are held by their families for the brief time in which bittersweet hellos and sad good-byes are said. The parents are then allowed to keep these afghans as a token of remembrance of their baby. Just having something soft to hold is often comforting.

Through our sources, we have learned that these grieving parents are quite touched by the fact that people they have never met cared enough to make something so beautiful and special for them and their child. It is our belief that ANYTHING that can be done to help these families, SHOULD be done.

OUR HISTORY

In 1996, a precious, beautiful little boy was born. Only he had already gone to become an angel, and we would never be allowed to see his eyes open. It was a very sad day. This lovely little baby was wrapped in a blanket, to be held and loved by his family for the short, but precious time during which bittersweet hellos and sad goodbyes had to be said. Then, there was nothing left to hold but the blanket he had been wrapped in.

This was his blanket. It was one of only a few tangible remembrances of a precious armful of love. But this blanket was a simple receiving blanket which had held countless little babies before him. It was washed and worn, and nothing special in its own right. How much more special it would have been if he could have been cradled in his own, handmade, special blanket that had been used only by him.

Thus, the idea for the "Afghans for Angels" project was created.

"Afghans for Angels" is always looking for more volunteers to help create these blanket gifts. If you can knit, crochet, quilt, or creatively decorate purchased blankets, we would LOVE to have your help!
