HALLOWEEN MAGIC
A bald-headed ghost
Drank some witches' brew
And on top of his head
A strange thing grew.
It was pointed and tall
And black as a bat
With stringy long hair
Where his head was flat.
The sad little ghost
Didn't want any hair
Or a black pointed hat
So he said, "Witch beware!"
Then he chanted some words
With a spell-casting switch
And gave Halloween Night
A bald-headed witch!!

PUMPKIN, PUMPKIN,PUMPKIN BRIGHT
Pumpkin, pumpkin, pumpkin bright,
When the goblins ride tonight,
Guide me with your kindly light,
Pumpkin, pumpkin, pumpkin bright.
Pumpkin. pumpkin, pumpkin grin,
Cheshire cat and tiger kin,
Night without and light within,
Dancing, dancing, pumpkin grin.
Pumpkin, pumpkin, pumpkin head,
When my "Tricks or Treats" are said,
Will you light me to my bed,
Kind old father pumpkin head?
Pumpkin, pumpkin, pumpkin pie,
I'm so sad that I could cry;
Why dear papa lantern, why
Must you end as pumpkin pie?
Pumpkin, pumpkin, pumpkin bright,
Autumn lantern in the night;
You'll be back next year all right?
Pumpkin, pumpkin, pumpkin bright

SPELLS
I need no spell to get me through
A tangled fence of briars.
I need no spell to help me pass
A wall of burning fires.
I need no spell to make a dress
Of silk from one of chintz.
I need no spell to turn a frog
Into a handsome prince.
But if you've got a spell around
That gets my homework right,
Or one that makes my mother think
I've gone to bed at night,
Or one that takes the garbage out,
Or one that feeds the cat,
I'd pay you my allowance
If you had a spell like that!

Let the Children Be
(Twas The Night Before Halloween)

'Twas Halloween night and all through the sky,

The clouds hid the moon as the bats glided by.

I was dressed all in white in my mama's old sheet,

Walking with friends down the ghost-haunted street.
All the kids were dressed in bright costumed array,

While flashlights and street lights guided our way.

We giggled and laughed as we hurried to each door,

Ringing or knocking, then laughing some more.
There were pumpkins aglow and skeletons dangling,

Scarecrows and shadows and silver chains clanging.

Grownups in masked faces opened doors in greeting,

As we stood with our bags and waited for treating.
Some people say that we should not have this night,

That too many kids are harmed by the sights or the fright -

But it's the one time a year when we can pretend to be

Someone else for a while, not you - not even me.
Let them celebrate now, as the bats glide on by,

For childhood is brief, like the blink of an eye.

Listen to their laughter and let the children be

Someone else for a while, not you and not even me.

ADVICE ON HOW TO SLEEP WELL ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT
The thing to remember when you go to bed
Is hang strings of garlic high over your head,
So werewolves and vampires won't come to call.
In fact you won't get many callers at all
'Cause garlic is smelly, besides its success
With magical creatures who visit distress
On humans who read scarey stories at night,
And sleep in their bedrooms without a night-light.
The thing to remember when you go to bed
Is putting a cross at your foot and your head,
'Cause witches and vampire bats are religious
And touching a sign like a cross gives them hideous
Goosebumps and warts, hives, the welts and the itches,
Which nobody likes, even vampire bats and witches.
But try not to toss or to turn in your bed.
If you kick off the crosses you're gonna wake dead.
The thing to remember when you go to bed
Is watch out for goblins who munch on your head.
What stops them is water, so ask for a glass,
Then pour it around so the goblins can't pass.
Or else make a run for the bathroom and turn
On the hot and cold faucets and watch goblins squirm.
As a last chance, since goblins all fear running streams,
If you don't own a bathroom, dream water-filled dreams.
So---that's my advice. Now just turn off the light.
Hope you sleep well the next Halloween Night!
