Introduction of BALI - the Island of the Gods!

Bali is a small island, measuring approximately 140km by 80km
(87mls by 50mls) and has an area of 5620sq km (3484sq mls).
It's adjacent to Java, Indonesia's most heavily populated island,
and is midway along the string of islands which make up the Indonesian
archipelago. Bali is dramatically mountainous: the central mountains
include several peaks around 2000m (6500ft).

South and north of the central mountains are Balis agricultural lands.
The southern region is a wide, gently sloping area where most of Balis
abundant rice crop is grown. The northern coastal strip is narrower, rising
more rapidly into the foothills of the central range, and has less rain.
Bali's western mountain region is arid and virtually unpopulated:
it's reputed to be the last home of the Balinese tiger.
|
The capital of Bali, Denpasar, is in the island's southern lobe; the main
tourist beach centers of Kuta and Legian hang further south, on the way to
the Bukit Peninsula. The Bukit Peninsula, which includes the temple and
surf spot of Ulu Watu and the luxury hotel enclave of Nusa Dua, is the
southernmost point of Bali, hanging from the island like an earring.

Though Jakarta, the national capital, is the gateway airport to Indonesia,
there is an increasing number of international flights to Ngurah Rai international airport,
the only airport on Bali. Ngurah Rai is in Tuban, just south of Kuta, though it is
referred to internationally as Denpasar. There's a choice of ferry
crossings between eastern Java and western Bali; your ferry fare will be
included in the services offered by bus companies shuttling visitors
between Denpasar and the Javanese towns of Surabaya, Yogyakarta and
Jakarta.

OVERVIEW FACTS & ORIENTATION
Bali is so picturesque that it could be a painted backdrop to paradise:
rice paddies trip down hillsides like giant steps, volcanoes soar through
the clouds, the forests are lush and tropical, and the beaches
are lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

The postcard paradise gloss has been polished up by the international tourist industry
rather than by the Balinese themselves - who don't even have a word for
paradise in their language - and the visitors have flocked in.
The Balinese have been remarkably resilient in the face of mass tourism
and 'I've-been-to-Bali-too' T-shirts: once you're away from lurching
Aussies with a scary thirst for beer, you'll find locals living in
traditional houses and participating in a timeless round of religious
rituals and rice cultivation.

In fact, the Balinese seem to handle tourism better than some of the
tourists, many of whom, although happy to be able to get a Coke, seem
disappointed that they're not the only one sucking back the real thing.
The locals' welcoming and stoic stance can at least partly be attributed
to a long history of absorbing, and profiting from, foreign influences.
Since the 15th century, when the Java-based Majapahit dynasty retreated
here, and onward through Portuguese and Dutch traders, invaders and
colonizers from the 16th to the 20th century, the Balinese have been
dealing with interlopers and taking fresh ideas on board while maintaining
rich traditions of music, dance, visual arts, architecture and religion.
