Runes
Runes originated as an alphabetic script used by the Northern Europeans from the first century until well into the Middle Ages. They stopped being used about the time that Roman alphabets became preferred, but in magic and divination they continued to be used.
Each rune has a meaning, and the runes are therefore quite different from other alphabets. The simple writing process is also transferred into a magical act as the runes have much religious and magical significance as well. In their third (and most popular) use, runes are utilised for divinatory readings, and it is in this guise that they have gained immense popularity in recent years.
RUNE CASTING
The best form of rune casting I have found is to use a runic casting board such as the one below. The four colours are representative of the four elements, and runes that land face up within the relevant sections can be interpreted. Click here for an overview of the four elements, or here for an overview of rune interpretation.
