To thine own self be true - my tribute to Shakespeare

My Favorite Shakespearean quotes

Sonnet 138

When my love swears that she is made of truth, I do believe her though I know she lies, That she might think me some untutored youth, Unlearned in the world's false subtleties. Thus vainly thinking that she thinks me young, Although she knows my days are past the best, Simply I credit her false-speaking tongue; On both sides thus is simple truth supprest. But wherefore says she not she is unjust? And wherefore say not I that I am old? Oh, love's best habit is in seeming trust, And age in love loves not to have years told: Therefore I lie with her and she with me, And in our faults by lies we flattered be. William Shakespeare (1564-1616)

Shakespeare has become a great interest to me since I've started college. So far in high school and college I have read Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, As You Like It, Macbeth, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Merchant of Venice, The Tempest, and Twelfth Night (on my own). In fact I saw the Rock Valley studio theater production of Twelfth Night in the fall of 1998 and it was very good. I liked Twelfth Night so much that I decided to write my Lit. term paper on it. I also have done three assignments on the above sonnet. It is now my favorite sonnet.

In October of 2000 I had the great pleasure to attend the Rock Valley College's first annual Shakespeare Festival. While there I saw As You Like It, Henry V, and A Midsummer Night's Dream. My favorite play now by far is MND. I especially loved the costuming of that particular play. My favorite scene is the Mechanical's play in the last scene. I'm greatly anticipating next year's festival.

I saw the seven academy award winning "Shakespeare in Love" the second day it came out in Rockford. I thought it was one of the best movies that I've seen in a very long time. I especially enjoyed the ending where the movie suggests that Viola (the bard's love) inspired the character of Viola in Twelfth Night. If you haven't seen "Shakespeare in Love", I highly reccommed it.
