Making Your Wig

The making of wigs is a difficult matter. It isn't just one of your holiday games. One of the most important parts of your costume is the wig. Without it, you just don't look like a cat. You look like a human being running around in spandex. So you have two options. Option number 1: You can buy your wig, but that can cost up to $150 and I know you don't all have that kind of money to throw around. So you will probably have to resort to Option 2: Make your own wig. I know the wigs they use in the musical are made out of yak hair. But don't worry. I'm not going to have you going out and shaving yaks. So you're probably wondering how you are going to do this. And this page is all about doing just that.

What you will need: Yarn in the colors of your costume; a nylon cap, maybe from a pair of old nylons, scissors, needle, thread, toothbrush or brush with bristles

The first step in making your wig is preparing your nylon cap if it is made from a pair of nylons. You first have to cut off the legs. Sew together the two holes where the legs used to be. Then adjust the cap until it fits loosely over your head. You are going to need to have a little extra room because it will shrink as you sew it together. Here comes the fun part. Not! You need to start making the fur. First you take one of the colors of yarn and make three or four loops that are about four inches in circumference (all the way around the loop). Cut it at one end and you should have some four-inch-long strings. Tie these strings into a knot at the center. Then unravel the yarn. Repeat these steps with all your different colors of yarn until you think you have enough unraveled yarn to cover the wig. Then start sewing the yarn on by sewing right through the knot and onto the nylon cap. Do not pull the thread too tight or you will not be able to fit the cap on your head when you're done. Once you have covered the cap, take your brush or toothbrush and brush lightly through the yarn to give it that fluffy look and feel. Arrange your wig so it is the right shape and then preserve that shape with hairspray. If you have any questions just e-meow me.
