Attended With: Pat. We made the trek up to Charlottesville expecting the DMB show to end all DMB shows, since this was the first time they'd played in their hometown in 5 years.
Venue: Scott Stadium, Charlottesville, VA.
Opening Act: Soulive and Neil Young w/Crazy Horse. More on them later.
Highlights: Hanging out in Charlottesville all day. We bought these slide whistles at this teacher store, and played them outside of this meeting place for a while until we got forced to leave. Basically wandering the city looking for trouble was the highlight. Pat had a great pre-show moment, because when a bearded Dave Matthews came out to introduce Neil Young, Pat mistook him for Neil, and thusly yelled "BOOO! Fuck you, Neil Young!" As for the actual show, the Two Step that opened was nice, and hearing True Reflections for the first and only time was cool. Pat and I got our first Ants Marching as the set closer, which rocked after a three year wait, but it would have been better as a show closer.
Lowlights: Most everything else. This overly short show was the live debut of the Everyday material, and it all sucked the first night out. All of it. Having the three guest singers singing back up just made it worse. Having Neil Young come out and bastardize All Along the Watchtower into one of the worst versions I've ever heard didn't help much either. The encore of If I Had It All and Stay basically killed whatever energy there was. Speaking of Neil Young, his opening set was like running in mud. Sluggish music with shit-sounding vocals. Musical legend, my ass. The last lowlights were the crappy cigars that we tried to smoke, but ended up hating so much that we left them at the stadium, under the seat.
