Gloom and Doom with DMB
Home | Back to '00

Show details:

Attended With: Pat. This was our second DMB show together, and first one with real seats, instead of the VBA lawn.

Venue: Virginia Beach Amphitheater, VA Beach, VA.

Opening Act: Taj Mahal and the Phantom Blues Band. They rocked out. Almost no one was there during their set, but I dug it enough to count 'em as yet another band DMB has gotten me into.

Highlights: I remember mostly thinking it was cool to see a bunch of the Lillywhite sessions songs(Raven, Grace is Gone, Grey Street, etc) for the first time live. Another highlight was having Jamal Milner (this badass guitar player) come out for a bunch of tunes, including an insane jam on Rapunzel. I dug hearing Best of What's Around as the opener at this one too, it's long been one of my favorite Dave tunes. Busted Stuff was cool with the Dave Ella Fitzgerald impression at the end.

Lowlights: A one song encore. This is a habit of Dave's, trying to shaft us with short encores, or bad ones. I'm not the hugest fan of the Song that Jane Likes, either. It's good that she likes it, but I don't. Save it. The biggest thing about this show, looking back, was the depressing air it had about it. Combine the Lillywhite songs, with the rainy air, and the lack of energy the band typically had in '00, and you get a sort of sluggish show.
