Attended With: Solo. I'd gotten back from Tabb High School Jazz Festival to find a ticket on the table, and my mom going "I thought you'd love to check that out." I had an hour to get there. I ended up running to my seat just as the band came on.
Venue: Gaines Theater, Christopher Newport University.
Opening Act: None, probably.
Highlights: Here's some background on Redman. When it was first determined before middle school that I was going to play sax, his MoodSwing tape was the first one my mom bought me. So he's basically been one of my biggest influences from day one. Getting to see him, and his quartet of the moment just make beautiful jazz was a great thing for me. Specific highlights include Last Rites of Rock'n'Roll, Before, Free Speech Phase I, and some of the tracks off of that MoodSwing record that I don't know the names of.
Lowlights: The only lowlight I can even think of is that the legendary Brian Blade wasn't in Redman's quartet for this show. It's not that the drummer he had wasn't good, it's that Blade is extraordinary.
