Federal Route 36 is an east-west route spanning Central Illinois. For the western half or so of its length in Illinois, it is multiplexed with Interstate 72. US36 enters Illinois at Hannibal Missouri, passes through or by Jacksonville, Springfield, Decatur and, when it isn't following I-72, many towns in east-central Illinois.

Missouri border to Morgan/Sangamon County line

Morgan/Sangamon County line to I-72/US36 split near Decatur

Near Decatur to Indiana border (the entire distance of US36 that is not multiplexed with I-72)
