SIGMA GAMMA RHO SORORITY, INC., presents...
BOLD & BEAUTIFUL BETA BETA CHAPTER.
- Dignity
- Pride
- Assertiveness
- Initiative
These are the marks of a Sigma woman. DIGNITY is in all she does; from the way she carries herself to the way she speaks; from the way she looks at herself to the way she looks at others. PRIDE in her work, from the classroom to the office; from the work with her children to the work with the children of the community; from the chapter meeting to the religious meeting, it carries through. ASSERTIVENESS in her every move, from the way she stands out to the way she stands up to be heard; from the way she speaks for others to the way she speakes to others; in her every stride and step, no obstacle remains insurmountable. INITIATIVE unmatched in all things; a Lady of Rho, by definition, will step up to whatever plates are necessary to take care of business. Business is our first priority. For us, "business" means taking care of the community, on our campuses, in our cities/towns/areas, and generally in whatever part of the world we can reach out and touch. Here at Indiana State University, Beta Beta chapter is known for "Taking Care of Business".
Informal History
The ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho have several things that make us stand out. One of them is our size. In comparison to the rest of the sororities in NPHC, we are the youngest and the smallest. We like it that way, because we see ourselves as an elite organization. By "elite", we don't mean "fanciest," or "richest". We only accept the cream of the crop, so to speak, because we seek out women who are not afraid of work. Women who are not afraid to stand out, stand up, and be heard. We seek women of class, character, and dedication to the community. We seek women who are already secure enough in their selfhood not to be daunted by what others may say, think, or feel. We seek women of vision, women of the future, TODAY. We seek women who will NOT settle for being the same as everyone else in the organization, who will NOT settle for being a t-shirt wearer, who will NOT accept the conditions of the community as they are. We seek women who, in addition to excellence in their personal and work lives, seek excellence in their academic lives. This is why we say we are an "elite" organization. When you get women of such calibre together in a room, you can imagine the results: nothing but stardom and achievement, the marks of true Goddesses of the Dawn.
We have gone by several nicknames in the 75 years of our existence. The nicknames include Sigmas (as we most often refer to ourselves), SGRho's, Rho's, Gamma Rho's, Goddess of the Dawn (inherent in our qualities), and so on. You can hear the elegant call of any Goddess; our sorority call is "Ee-Yip," although you will hear variations thereof, including a variety of what we call Poodle Calls. Our sorority colors are rhoyal blue and antique gold, our sorority flower is the yellow tea rose, and our mascot is the french toy poodle.
