Star Wars Rogue Squadron
- Format: Nintendo 64
- Genre: Flying/Shooting
- Number of Players: 1
- Peripherals: 4 meg RAM expansion
Well, better late than never right guys? Anyways, Rogue Squadron was one of the most anticipated games of the Christmas season for the Nintendo 64 along with Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, and Nintendo's beloved Zelda 64. We know all about the license so I'll get right to the meat. How does it fare against other flying/shooting games on the market? Well it's not quite Colony Wars, but let's take a looksee...
Graphics:
The attention to detail in Rogue Squadron is nothing short of amazing. The developers really concentrated on bringing the Star Wars universe to life, and it shows in nearly every mission. However, I would recommend buying the expansion pak. Smaller enemies such as storm troopers fighting from the ground look like pixelated white dots without the ram pak. The extra memory just gives the game an overall more polished look, and I'd recommend buying it anyways as Nintendo and Rare are sure to utilize it in future titles(ahem...Perfect Dark). Without the pak, it is simply standard N64 fare.
Control:
Nothing amazing really. Standard fare. The analog stick pilots your ship, while the A,B, and c buttons control various weapons and speed boosts. That's all I'm going to say about the game's control because I'm just lazy(sorry just finished doing my income taxes).
Sound:
All I can say is WOW! Rogue Squadron is packed with classic Star Wars tunes, dynamic voices, and outstanding sound effects that truly immerse you in your missions and add a much needed sense of urgency to them. The only complaint I have is the crappy Han Solo impersonator. Other than that, you couldn't ask for much better on a cartridge.
Gameplay:
It's nothing revolutionary, but not many people were expecting a revolutionary experience. Being able to pilot X-wings, Y-Wings, A-Wings, Tie Fighters, and even the Millenium Falcon is an experience in itself. All aspects of the game are easy to pick up, and they many varied missions will keep you busy for at least a while.
Overall:
This is the game N64 owners have been waiting for, and it should tide them over until the "big ones" from Rare and Nintendo are released. A dream license coupled with solid gameplay creates a truly fun gaming experience. Besides, I find myself having an uncontrollable urge to play it every time I watch the trailer for episode one.
