(Reigned 526-530). On 18 May, 526, Pope John I (q.v.) died in prison at Ravenna, a victim of the angry suspicions of Theodoric, the Arian king of the Goths. When, through the powerful influence of this ruler, the cardinal-priest, Felix of Samnium, son of Castorius, was brought forward in Rome as John's successor, the clergy and laity yielded to the wish of the Gothic king and chose Felix pope. He was consecrated Bishop of Rome 12 July, 526, and took advantage of the favor he enjoyed at the court of Theodoric to further the interests of the Roman Church, discharging the duties of his office in a most worthy manner. February 24 -- SS. Bonfilius, Alexis, Amadeus, Hugh, Sostenes, Manettus and Buonagiunta were seven young Florentines who joined a confraternity of the Blessed Virgin and were inspired by a vision of our Lady to withdraw from the world. They settled eventually on the slopes of Monte Seranio, where they built a church. They received another vision of our Lady, in which she advised them to follow the rule of St. Augustine. She carried in her hand a black habit, and an angel at her side held a scroll with the title "servants of Mary". April 20 -- A nun at the age of nine, Agnes became head of a newly established convent at Procena when she was still in her teens. She subsequently founded a Dominican convent in her native town and was its prioress until her death. She led an extremely austere life and is reputed to have enjoyed many visions and raptures. February 3 -- He was said to be bishop of Sebaste and to have been martyred in the persecution of Licinius. His legend tells us that his powers of healing extended to animals, that hunters who had come out into the mountains to seek wild beasts for the amphitheater were amazed to see them clustered around the saint, and that on another occasion he cured a boy who was suffocating because a fish-bone had stuck in his throat. March 5 -- Born near Naples of prosperous parents, Carlo Gaetano Calosirto joined the Franciscans of the Alcantarine reform at the age of sixteen, taking the name of John Joseph of the Cross. He led an extremely ascetic life, was three times superior of the monastery of the Piedimonte di Alife and finally provincial of the Italian Alcantarines.
