ACID AND ACID JAZZ - These are pretty much the same type of music. Acid is a type of music where the synths are manipulated to the max and the beats are really offbeat. Acid jazz is the same thing, only it's more poppy.
ACOUSTIC TECH - Pretty music that can include acoustic guitars, horns, and sometimes harps. It's those instruments played to a techno beat.
AMBIENT AND ATMOSPHERIC - Music that is made to relax a listener. This type of music uses long notes played on synthesizers. However, this type of music can also be achieved on other instruments as well.
BIG BEAT AND LIQUID TECHNO - Just your average techno, pretty much. You'll see a lot of DJs using big beat.
DIGITAL HARDCORE - Mostly a combination of heavy beats, noize (digital feedback), and a whole lot of bass. Used a lot by DJs.
DRUM AND BASS (DNB) - Mostly goes with music that is influenced by rap or trip-hop, drum and bass music is exactly what it says it is: drums with bass. There can also be a lot of electronics thrown in too!
EBM - Electro Body Music. Seen a lot in older 80's industrial. It's pretty much dancy industrial.
HOUSE/CLUB/RAVE - All of these music types are pretty much the same thing. This type of music involves a beat machine, a few synths, and a whole lot of samples. This music is made for the sole purpose of dancing and is often repetitious.
NEW AGE - This type of music is sometimes confused with ambient. Like ambient, this music is meant to relax the listener, but it uses synthesizers with usually no beats and a whole lot of nature samples (i.e. birds, ocean, flies buzzing).
NOIZE - Exactly as it sounds: it's just digital feedback that can be manipulated.
SYNTH-POP - This is poppy (upbeat music you usually hear on almost any radio station that plays The Backstreet Boys or N'Sync) music that is electronic.
TRANCE AND GOA - Both of these terms are used interchangeably. A great definition is just "psychodelic dance music", but that's not saying enough. It's kind of like ambient music with a danceable beat.
TRIBAL AND JUNGLE - A type of beat that sounds like something you'd see a tribe of Indians dancing to. Used a lot in trance, rave, and house music.
TRIP-HOP - Electronica rap music. The lyrics are rapped, but the music is techno.
