THE AMERICAN ANNUAL MONITOR

O SURNAMES

Lindley H. ONG
Age: 20
Date of Decease: 7mo. 8 1862
Smithfield, Ohio.
Son of Lewis and Elmira ONG.
Being of a lively and social disposition he was endeared to a large circle of acquaintances whose society he very much enjoyed. Some months before his death he expressed the belief that it would be right for him to enlist in the army in defence of his beloved country. This was a great trial to his parents (believing as they do that all wars and fightings are incompatible with the teachings of Christ), and he was tenderly entreated by them to abandon the idea, but notwithstanding their admonitions, he joined the army in the 11th mo. 1861. He had not, however, been long thus engaged before he was convinced that Christ's Kingdom is not of this world, and therefore His servants could not fight, which he often expressed in letters written to his parents and friends at home.

About three months before his death he was detailed as a nurse in the hospital, and the afflicted found in him an excellent nurse and a sympathizing friend. After an absence of seven months he came home on a visit. One of his friends, who took a deep interest in his spiritual welfare, inquired of him how he felt in his present situation, alluding to its perils and awful responsibility, to which he replied, "My trust is in my dear Saviour, I have never hurt any one yet, and I never intend to. I want thee to pray for me. I hope to be of use to some of those poor sick soldiers both bodily and spiritually, for I feel that it is time I was doing something for my Lord and Master. In His unbounded mercy He has brought me to see that I was a great sinner, and now I hope to spend the balance of my days in His service. War I now feel sure is very wrong, and I am more attached to the principles of peace professed by Friends than ever before. If we should never meet again on earth I hope to meet thee in Heaven. I have a hope in that Arm that is able to save to the uttermost."

Soon after his return from this visit he was seized by what proved to be his last sickness. His father hearing of his illness went to him, and was with him the two weeks of his life; although his suffering was at times very great he bore it with patience, desiring that his faith might continue unto the end. His language often gave evidence of Divine Grace, and thankfulness seemed to be the clothing of his spirit....At one time he prayed as follows, "Oh! Heavenly Father, wilt Thou be pleased to have compassion on me a poor unworthy creature, one who has strayed far from Thy fold, be pleased to forgive my many sins and transgressions. Create in me a clean heart, Oh! Lord, and renew a right spirit within me. Wash me and make me clean in the blood of Thy dear Son, that I may be prepared to join that innumerable company which surround Thy throne in singing praises to Thee and Thy beloved Son for ever and ever."

Lying still for several minutes he then requested his father to pray for him, which request being complied with he appeared calm for a short time, then looking up in his father's face he smiled and said, "Father, thine and mother’s prayers have been answered, praise be to His ever blessed name...About twenty-four hours before the close he said to his father, "Give my love to my dear mother and my brothers and sisters, tell them my dear Saviour calls and I must go; bid them all farewell, and tell them to prepare for death, and invite them to follow me to that mansion in our Father's house where I shall shortly be." After which he soon became unconscious and gradually and quietly passed away. The following verse was found carefully folded in his pocket-book.

"This was in which the soldier fights,
Is not the war for me;
By it are crushed all fond delights,
And sadness here I see;
But there's a war, a holy strife,
In which is gained a blissful life
Through all eternity;
Oh! that's the war for me."

Smithfield, R.I.

William OSBORN
Age: 83
Date of Decease: 10mo. 3 1861
Silgo, O.
An Elder.
He removed from North Carolina in the year 1815, and settled in the neighborhood, where he resided the remainder of his life. Being devoted to the cause he was useful in setting up many of the meetings now established, in what was then a newly settled country. He was also diligent in their attendance, and in the support of the Discipline, often walking several miles to attend his own and neighboring meetings. Although he suffered so much bodily pain in the latter part of his illness as to prevent much conversation, yet he frequently remarked, he believed his work was done.

Benjamin A. OVERMAN
Age: 41
Date of Decease: 6mo. 2 1862
Washington Co., Ind.
He was much attached to the principles and doctrines of the Society of Friends, believing them to be founded on the New Testament.

During his protracted illness he was patient, prayerful, and uncomplaining, giving evidence that it was not by works of righteousness that he had done, but through the mercy of God in Christ Jesus that he was enabled to look forward to a state of eternal blessedness. He remarked, "In the early part of my sickness, I desired, if it be the Lord's will, to stay with my dear little family longer, but I see and feel now that it cannot be, and I have become resigned, though the struggle has been great. But through the influence of that grace which is sufficient for us all, I have given them up to my Heavenly Father, who knoweth best, and who doeth all things well."

In taking leave of his wife, he said in a sweet and resigned spirit, "The Lord's will be done, all will be well with me, I feel willing to go."

"Do not grieve so much, my way is clear, and all is bright and peaceful, yes, glorious! glorious! I thank Thee, O! Father Eternal." He then quietly departed, leaving the assurance that he was with Jesus.
