He manifested an unusual regard for serious things. His parents were often encouraged in the practice of reading the Scriptures before retiring for the night by his simple faithfulness in asking for it, and a little prayer or hymn was often on his lip when he had been thought to be asleep. He earnestly desired that his friends might meet him in that heaven he evidently felt was opening for him.
"A spirit whispered to me-
O! trust this gift of thine
In its untarnished luster
Into these hands of mine.
I'll keep it with a tenderness
Thy love hath never known,
And shrine it in a casket
Far fairer than thine own.
And when I will restore it,
I promise that its light,
Shall in transcendent glory
Outshine the gems of night."

She removed with her family in the year 1826 from the State of North Carolina to Indiana, and settled in Rush Co., near where Walnut Ridge Monthly Meeting has since been established. She was one of the early pioneers that requested for a Preparative Meeting at that place. She was diligent in the attendance of our religious meetings, concerned for the welfare of the Society, the guarded and religious training of her children, and careful to live a good example in the world. She appeared as one having her day's work done, and quietly waiting her change, which she frequently said she believed would not long be delayed, and was heard to say a few days before her death, that if it was not for the shock to those left behind, she would rather go suddenly. Her wish seemed to be granted in a remarkable manner, for the summons was sudden, but her relatives and friends have the assurance that her end was peace.

He submitted to the renovating power of divine grace, and being attached by sincere conviction to the doctrines and testimonies of our religious Society, he endeavored to maintain them in a circumspect and consistent walk, as an upright, self-denying follower of his Saviour. During his illness he uttered many weighty expressions, some of which were as follows:
3d mo. 3d. A friend calling to see him, he said, "I have always loved thee, but thou seems dearer to me now than ever." He then spoke of the close exercises, and deep conflict of spirit, he had been passing through in giving up all that was near and dear in this world, and to obtain that evidence of acceptance with his dear Saviour, which his soul desired, but, said he, "I am so poor, so weak, I have hardly strength to lift up my eyes to heaven, Oh! such weakness, if I may be accepted at last, what a mercy! I desire to say, not my will, but Thine be done."
On the 8th, calling again, he said, "I have almost done with this world, I have prayed that the Lord would not spare, not his eye pity, until everything that is not acceptable is removed, and my will entirely subjugated to His will. Oh! Lord, have mercy upon my soul." After a little pause, he said, "The Lord has been with me in days past; when I have been out at work alone, He has been with me and filled my heart with His love and good presence, and I felt it was good to be alone that I might meditate upon Him."
First day morning several friends called to see him, to whom he spoke with much feeling. To one in regard to the state of his mind, he said, "I have craved mercy; the prayer of my heart has been, that the Lord would be merciful. It is a great thing to be prepared to enter that everlasting Kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ; nothing unclean can enter there, we must be made pure and holy, we must be sanctified. Oh! how precious is His love, how precious!"
11th. To one who called to see him, he said, "I am here yet; I did not expect last night to be here now; I am ready and willing to go. I long to depart, and be with Christ, but I pray for patience to wait the Lord's time, the Lord is so good to me." In reply to an observation, he said he rejoiced that he was made willing to go, he had longed for the time to come, but he felt willing to wait the Lord's time. To a niece he said, "Thou art a dear child to me, I love thee dearly. Oh! be faithful and love the Saviour; trust in the Lord and He will carry thee safely through, and preserve thee in the hollow of His hand." She told him, it seemed as though she could not spare him. "Oh!" he said, "I have given up this world; farewell, in the everlasting truth."
14th. His physicians spoke encouragingly as to the progress of his disease, when he replied, that no medicine would heal him, that it was out of the power of man to raise him. "I do not expect to get better, if I do recover it will be nothing short of the great mercy and power of God; I do not put any dependence in anything else; I want you to understand my faith is established in the Saviour; I have found nothing else will stand; we must all come to this. If I should get better, I should live a different life;" then said, "we should all be careful of letting too many idle words escape our lips."
On parting with a nephew, he said, "Dear child, I believe though thou hast felt the presence of the dear Saviour, thou wilt have many trials and temptations to pass through in this vale of tears, but if thou art faithful to the Lord's requirings, He will give peace to Thy soul." As the time of his departure drew near, he said, "I long to go and be at rest in the dear Redeemer's Kingdom."

In him was exemplified the efficacy of divine grace in subduing and controlling the natural heart of man, sanctifying and preparing it for the Master's service. In early life he submitted to its influence, and it manifested itself in the formation of his Christian character. He was permitted for many years to pass through intense suffering, which he was enabled to bear with resignation. After a season of great pain he remarked, he would freely pass through the same again, for what he then enjoyed of his Master's presence. He frequently spoke of his future prospects; at one time, said, all was bright and his hope of life in the world to come increased.

During his sickness, he observed that he had made it his study to let go the affairs of the world, and keep them as much as possible out of his mind, and he felt that he could say, he was willing to leave the result with the Great Disposer of events who "doeth all things well." At another time, he said, "all that is left for me in this hour is the mercy of God in Christ Jesus." The evening before he died, he remarked, "as I look upon the valley of the shadow of death I can say, I feel no fear."

Date of Decease: 8mo. 11 1862
She was much inclined to stay at home, even to non-attendance of Meetings, and in her latter years was frequently heard to acknowledge the loss she had sustained thereby, especially after disease had deprived her of that privilege. Referring to an attack of severe illness which occurred a year previous, she said to her daughter, that it was well she was not taken away at that time, as she did not see her way as clearly as she would wish; she added, it was her impression that it would not be long before she would be done with all things here below, and she had faith to believe her end would be peace.

It was hers to bear with Christian resignation a long and distressing illness. Her placid countenance and cheerful conversation gave evidence of a mind at peace with her Saviour. Though surrounded by a family to whom she was tenderly attached, yet she was favored to resign all to the will of her Heavenly Father. She often broke forth in utterances of thanksgiving and praise, and expressed a desire to depart and be at rest. To a friend who said to her just before her departure, "Thou art almost home!", she replied, "Oh yes! and all is well."

He had been a sedate and sober lad, taking an interest in the attendance of our meetings and the First-day school. In his last sickness he was very composed, and expressed a willingness and even a desire to depart and be with Christ. In leaving a message to an absent brother, he said, "Tell him I am ready and willing to die, and I hope we shall meet in heaven."
